The Ghostbusters movies might just be fun comedies with sci-fi and horror twists, but that doesn’t stop them from being pretty intense with the strong ghosts that feature. The Ghostbusters definitely have their work cut out for them, especially when they are faced with literal world-ending threats that will make sure that Hell freezes over before they get their payday.

The best Ghostbusters movies always feature an abundance of ghosts, but only some of them have entities and vapors that are capable of mass destruction. Whether through gluttony or world-conquering ambition, these Ghostbusters ghosts are not ones to mess with.

8 Slimer

An Ugly Little Spud Who Can And Will Eat Anything

  • Featured in: Ghostbusters (1984), Ghostbusters 2 (1989), Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)

The first ghost that the Ghostbusters successfully capture and contain is Slimer, a gluttonous green ghost who is often referred to as Onionhead. Slimer isn’t just known for being green, as it’s his appetite that people have to look out for when encountering this Class 5 Full-Roaming Vapor.

Slimer definitely doesn’t have ambitions to take over the world, nor can he accomplish such a task. However, Slimer can eat anything in his sight, and he’s constantly stalking New York City for a new snack. No matter how many times Slimer has been captured, it seems he will always come back in search of grub.

7 The Library Ghost

An Avid Reader Who Shushes Those Who Won’t Respect Library Rules

  • Featured in: Ghostbusters (1984), Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)

The Librarian Ghost holds the title of the first ghost seen on-screen in the Ghostbusters franchise. Chilling in appearance, the Library Ghost seems rather peaceful and will spend her time reading books and tending to the lower levels of the New York City Public Library. This ghost might be friendly, but pushing her buttons will reveal a horrific true form that people should avoid.

She’s capable of stacking books in odd places, haunting those who come to her domain, and scaring the lights out of anyone with her monstrous form. Whilst the Librarian Ghost is only responsible for a few harmless haunts, the fact that the Ghostbusters have been unable or unwilling to capture her even 40 years later, proves she could be rather strong and dangerous.

6 Egon Spengler

One Of The Original Ghostbusters Who Became A Ghost Himself

  • Featured in: Ghostbusters (1984), Ghostbusters 2 (1989), Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)

Egon Spengler remains as one of the original members of the Ghostbusters. He’s the brains of the group and has helped them save not only money for their rent but also the world, time and again. Tragically, Egon Spengler left the Ghostbusters to try and eradicate Gozer once and for all on his own, but it cost him his life. His unfinished business meant that his spirit would remain bound to his farmhouse, whereas as a ghost, he would aid his granddaughter in continuing his work for the human race.

Egon Spengler is definitely a strong ghost, who is carried through the love he shares for his family and friends. Egon’s ghostly powers and amazing intellect allow him to help the Ghostbusters finally destroy Gozer, and provide the people close to him with closure, proving just how strong of a person he was.

5 Zuul and Vinz Clortho

The Terror Dogs Who Act As Gatekeeper And Keymaster To Gozer’s Return

terror dog
  • Featured in: Ghostbusters (1984), Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)

The Gatekeeper and the Keymaster were the dreaded demigods and minions of Gozer that were able to possess humans and wreak ultimate havoc in their Terror Dog forms. These two Terror Dogs are not just a duo of menaces that can terrorize the streets of Manhattan on all fours, but they are demonic entities that used to be worshiped thousands of years ago.

The Terror Dogs are granted power from Gozer, and they relish in it with servitude and loyalty to their godly master. Whilst the Terror Dogs aren’t the strongest ghosts on the market, they are the keys to the world’s destruction.

4 Vigo the Carpathian

The Sorrow Of Moldavia, Bound To A Painting

Vigo the Carpathian
  • Featured in: Ghostbusters 2 (1989)

An ancient tyrant who ruled the lands of Carpathia in Medieval times, Vigo is one who many should fear, and history would do well to forget his name or remember it with haunting nostalgia. Vigo is a conquerer and a man who unlocked the powers of sorcery to help him become a tyrant who sought grand ambitions and immortality at its finest.

Even when executed, Vigo knew that death was but a door and his return would be grand. As a living painting, Vigo would enthrall those to do his bidding, and to seek out a new body to facilitate his rebirth. Even as a painting, Vigo exhibited extreme powers of manipulation and control of other ghosts, so who knows what else he could have done if he had been given physical form.

3 Stay Puft Marshmallow Man

The Destructor Form Of Gozer With A Soft Chewy Side

Stay Puft
  • Featured in: Ghostbusters (1984)

When Gozer the Gozerian arrived in Manhattan to provide immense destruction, they allowed the Ghostbusters to choose the form of their imminent demise. Whilst most of the Ghostbusters were able to clear their minds to not think of a form for the destructor, Ray was unable to take his mind off of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, thus dooming New York City and perhaps the world to a 100-foot-tall and murderous marshmallow.

Stay Puft the Marshmallow Man is the destructor form of Gozer, and this gigantic marshmallow is all but cuddly and chewy and perfect for roasting fires, as he wants to relish in destruction. Whilst the destructor form is something to fear, a marshmallow man meant that the Ghostbusters’ proton packs could roast him into non-existence.

2 Garraka

A God Responsible For The Ice Age

Garraka
  • Featured in: Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)

The Ghostbusters might try to be a group of humble haunted pest exterminators, but they seem unable to distance themselves from world-conquering ghosts and ghouls. One of their most dangerous and chilling threats yet was Garraka, a conqueror who wanted Hell and Earth to freeze over for his empire.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire – 7 Things That Didn't Make Sense

A few questionable scenes happen in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire that might have audiences thinking about alternatives or what just happened.

Garraka was bested by humanity over 4,000 years ago, but in modern-day New York City, he grows hungry for conquest once more. Garraka has the unique ability to control ghosts to his will, as well as the strength to create an endless winter that could have frozen over the world if it were not for the Ghostbusters and the firekeeper.

1 Gozer the Gozerian

An Entity From Another Dimension That Claims Godhood

Gozer in Ghostbusters
  • Featured in: Ghostbusters (1984), Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)

Worshiped as a god, there’s a reason that Gozer is the strongest and most feared ghost of them all. Gozer is capable of grand power on a scale that the world would never see before or again, as this ancient destructor has wiped out civilizations almost like it’s a sport. The souls of the dead are ruled by Gozer, providing them with an army of haunting vapors and spirits.

Gozer is a true world-ender, and even with their defeat in 1984, they would return once more to bring about another apocalypse, to consume humanity and plunge the world into darkness forever. Gozer is capable of great things, and violence is at the forefront of their mind, which they commit to with electrical powers from their fingertips and the summoning forms of destructors.
