The God of War franchise is following the trend of live-action video game adaptations, and while intriguing, there is very little known about the project. Over the years, God of War has become one of the most notable gaming franchises, and Kratos' journey has brought the complex demigod through a variety of harrowing scenarios.
Adapting God of War into a live-action show is no easy task. Kratos faces some of the most popular gods from Ancient Greek and Norse myths, and it will be difficult to one-up the story that is already being told within the games. However, a live-action series has one big benefit over the gaming franchise. Fellow Sony exclusive The Last of Us has used its live-action series as a way to dive deeper into specific points of lore, and God of War following in these footsteps would be a wise move.
A Different Amazon Show May Have Just Given God of War Its Best Possible Kratos Actor
Amazon Prime is getting a God of War series, and the recent finale of one of its biggest hits may have teased the perfect Kratos.
Like The Last of Us, God of War Has Plenty of Lore to Explore at a Deeper Level
Season 2 of The Last of Us Sheds More Light on the WLF and Seraphites
The second season of HBO's The Last of Us series is underway, and the story is beginning to dive a little deeper into the conflict between the Seraphites and the WLF. It's a fascinating sub-plot within the larger story of The Last of Us Part 2, but there is still more to be explored, which makes the HBO show's approach intriguing.
HBO's series even goes so far as to explore Isaac's backstory and the violent formation of the WLF. Expanding parts of the lore that the games only had time to scratch the surface of is one of the biggest upsides of adapting video games into live-action, and God of War has plenty of plot points that could be perfect for this treatment.
Isaac is played by Jeffrey Wright in both The Last of Us Part 2 and the live-action series.
God of War's Norse Saga Features Strong Characters That Deserve More Attention
- Amazon's God of War series is expected to be adapted from the franchise's Norse storyline.
- There have already been two seasons ordered for the series.
Considering that there are two seasons already being planned, it's possible that the first could follow the story of 2018's God of War, while the second season jumps into the events of Ragnarok. It's unclear right now, but it's definitely a likely scenario. Depending on what path the show takes when fleshing out its characters, important supporting roles like Faye, Thor, Sif, and various Aesir and Vanir gods will hopefully get more screen time.
For example, in the Norse saga, Faye is described as an even match for Thor during the war between the Aesir and Vanir gods. Considering that the games only feature Faye in brief flashbacks, the Amazon series presents the opportunity to finally get to see this battle firsthand. Even getting a glimpse into Thor and Sif's life together before the former became a shell of his former self could be fascinating to see. A larger look at Aesir life in general would be exciting for a lot of fans who hoped to see more explored in the Norse saga.
Amazon's God of War was originally announced back in 2022, but production has since been rebooted with Ronald D. Moore as the showrunner.
The God of War Franchise Currently Feels Stuck in Limbo
- Santa Monica Studio has yet to announce the next God of War game.
- Rumors have circulated about what the franchise has in store next.
There have been plenty of rumors claiming that a God of War side story is on the way, but there has yet to be anything concrete confirmed. Between the game franchise and the Amazon series, there's no telling when more God of War content will be ready, but when it finally arrives, the next story will hopefully expand the lore in exciting new ways.
