Summary

  • The God of War franchise faces some uncertainty about its future due to the lack of recent updates on the next entry.
  • Speculation abounds about a potential Egyptian setting and a prequel story for the next God of War game.
  • There are numerous ways for Kratos to have new companions in a hypothetical title using this setup.

God of War finds itself at something of a crossroads at the current moment. After the popularity of the preceding games, Santa Monica Studio has been largely silent on when and where Kratos may find himself in the next God of War entry. Notably, and somewhat disappointingly, God of War's 20th anniversary passed earlier this year (and GoW3's 15th) without being accompanied by any new significant announcements or updates on what may be in store for the franchise.

Despite not much coming from the developer yet, reports and rumors continue to fuel conjecture about the various directions the next God of War project might take, whether it be an Atreus-led solo adventure or half-sequel or something entirely different. Some scattered hints suggest a potential God of War set in Egypt, as material and iconography related to it has previously been glimpsed and teased. And though this may also imply Kratos will find himself alone again on such a journey, if it does turn out to be the case, there are still a few ways that it could be less isolating.

A God of War live-action adaptation based on the 2018 title is in the works for Amazon Prime Video.

As rumors of a God of War prequel continue, bringing Kratos' story to Egypt could present an exciting gameplay shake-up for fans.

Kratos' Companions Through the Years

In the earlier games, a much younger and rage-filled Kratos usually smashed his way across the lands solo. One famous instance of him gaining a companion of sorts was when he tore off Helios' head to use as a living lantern. This was obviously antagonistic, though, and Helios took every chance to mock and mislead Kratos. But starting with 2018's reboot and again in God of War Ragnarok, an older and relatively more reserved Kratos found himself alongside a couple of close allies.

Mirroring the situation with Helios, Kratos and his son Atreus free the figure of Mimir from his imprisonment by cutting off his head. However, this was by Mimir's own request, and results in a much more amicable relationship, as Mimir's disembodied head then guides the duo through the Norse world. Later, they're joined by Tyr, Freya, Angrboda, Brok, and Sindri. And even if it's set prior to this, there are some pieces in place for how God of War can meld Egyptian mythology to create some new possible companions.

An Egyptian God of War Prequel Already Has An In to Give Kratos a New Ally or Two

Released in 2021, the God of War: Fallen God comic tie-in provides some solid ways for a game set during the same period to introduce new possible companions. During his self-imposed exile in Egypt, Kratos meets an elderly scribe along with an ibis and a baboon; the latter of which are shown to be forms of the Egyptian god, Thot. This could be further fleshed out in a game that gives them a part similar to Mimir. Characters like these could explain the lay of the lands and their lore to Kratos and, by default, players, by organically filling in important information and acting as narrators of sorts that provide context through legends and tales related to the region.

A God of War set in Egypt will likely put Kratos in conflict with its gods, and there are other known members of the pantheon that could fit into the role of sidekick. Anubis, the traditional guide to Duat, the Egyptian underworld, could also provide an avatar to assist Kratos as he tackles whatever obstacles he runs into. These are just some of the possibilities for how Kratos might find himself fighting or working alongside other figures again in a theoretical prequel in Egypt, as there is more than enough room for Santa Monica to replicate and iterate on this idea in such a framework.
