A reputable insider has hinted that the next mainline God of War game could use Egyptian mythology as its backdrop. In the near-three years since God of War Ragnarok released and capped off the franchise's Norse saga, fans have been wondering where Kratos' story will pick up.

God of War Developer Cory Barlog's unnannounced project is doing well

One of the most beloved aspects of God of War games is the way they adapt existing mythologies and mold great stories involving Kratos — and now his son Atreus — out of them. God of War fans have a laundry list of mythologies that they'd like for developer Santa Monica Studio to take on, but the studio can only go one at a time. However, with God of War Ragnarok having concluded Kratos' tenure in the Norse lands, the time is ripe for the next mainline franchise entry to take on a brand-new setting.

God of War Ragnarok's sequel, God of War 6, has tougher choices to make than deciding which mythology it'll travel to for the foreseeable future.

Kratos Will Reportedly Use an Egyptian Weapon in the Next God of War Game

Speculation has been rife, but Egypt remains at the forefront of mythology requests from God of War fans. Interestingly, Santa Monica Studio even had initial plans to set the 2018 God of War reboot in Egypt, but ultimately went with Norse mythology. If a recent tidbit of info from well-known industry insider Tom Henderson is to be believed, though, Egypt very well might be the setting for the next big God of War title. Henderson stated in the latest episode of the Insider Gaming podcast that Kratos will wield a "curved Egyptian sword" in the next mainline God of War game.

This sword could look like a scimitar or khopesh, but more importantly, Kratos' possession of the weapon implies that he'll find himself in Egyptian lands for the next big entry in the God of War series. Egypt has been referenced in many prior God of War games, but God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok more outwardly hinted at the region with artifacts and weapons, with Tyr even dual-wielding khopesh swords in the Valhalla DLC. Moreover, the God of War: Fallen God comic book that chronicles Kratos' time between the Greek and Norse lands is explicitly set in Egypt.

Keeping the above information in mind, it does seem like the God of War franchise has been building up to an Egyptian setting for quite some time. However, it's worth noting that after the events of God of War Ragnarok, Atreus may end up being the protagonist of the next mainline series entry, with Kratos appearing in a supporting role. The game is years away at the very least, though, so it's a wait-and-see matter for now.
