A new job listing at Sony's Santa Monica Studio for a combat designer may lend credence to the notion that a new God of War title is already in development. The job listing from Sony stated that the combat designer position is a contract role, and that Santa Monica Studio is seeking candidates familiar with the combat designs used in modern God of War games, including God of War Ragnarok.
The job listing came amid a busy time for Sony and its properties. Although no God of War games are expected to launch in 2025, development continues on a rumored God of War spin-off that will reportedly tie back to Kratos' Greek origins and be a radical departure from the recent Norse setting. The last time the franchise was set in Greece was in 2013's God of War: Ascension, a prequel to the entire series that provided fans with some backstory to Kratos' feud with Ares. Despite its favorable response from fans, God of War: Ascension was never re-released outside its initial launch on the PS3.

Sony's New Combat Designer Job Listing Asks for God of War Experience
Though rumors about Santa Monica Studio's upcoming projects continue to circulate, a fresh job post may provide some insight into the developer's plans. A job listing on Sony's Greenhouse page indicated the company is looking for a Sr. Combat Designer for a contract post on an unnamed project, with a focus on designing and implementing enemy and boss characters. The Sr. Combat Designer would take directions from other designers as needed and work with Sony's animation and art teams. However, the job listing also requires candidates to discuss the combat systems and mechanics for one or more third-person melee action RPGs. Further, preferred candidates must be fluent in the combat design mechanics and systems used in God of War Ragnarok and its 2018 predecessor.
While Santa Monica Studio has not officially announced what the next God of War title will be, the fact that the job listing pointed out the combat systems of both Norse saga titles could provide clues into the direction that the developer is headed. Additional roles that Santa Monica Studio is looking to fill include artists and quality assurance contractors, indicating that the next mainline God of War title is still in early development. Ergo, fans should temper expectations in the meantime.
Between the new job listing and continued production of the God of War Amazon TV series, the franchise remains in the spotlight. When Santa Monica Studio will share news of its upcoming plans remains to be seen.
