Godzilla is a monster with many enemies and very few friends. It's mostly his fault. He's not the most agreeable guy, and he struggles with communication. Everyone smaller than him is an obstacle, and almost everyone his size is an enemy. He'd prefer to be left alone in his home at the bottom of the ocean, but people rarely allow him that luxury. So, when Godzilla gets a friend, he should try to hold onto him. He doesn't live by that maxim. That's why King Caesar disappeared almost as quickly as he appeared.

The modern Monsterverse is a little more straightforward with Godzilla's character than the classic Toho films. The original Godzilla had a wide range of expressions, sometimes including the occasional victory dance. The Monsterverse sees him as an animal first and everything else second. His desires and plans are very simple. He defends his territory, fights other monsters, and gives very little thought to the humans he kills along the way. Even there, he has a strong bond with Mothra, adding a lot to the character.

King Caesar's Japanese name is Kingu Shīsā, which explains his origins. The Shisa is a cultural artifact of the Ryukyuan people, who are also known as Okinawans. They're frequently represented in statues on roofs and outside of gates. They're celebrated as wards that can protect a structure from any kind of danger. Derived from the Chinese guardian lions, they resemble a cross between a lion and a dog. That context provides pretty much every element of King Caesar. The first version of the character was called King Balgan, which became King Vulcan. He would have been a scaled monster with floppy dog ears that he could pin up at will. The name change came with a full redesign that also seemingly reshaped the film. He would fight alongside Godzilla and Anguirus against Mechagodzilla.

Narratively, King Caesar is the defender of Okinawa. His legend as a guardian spirit is reflected in the film. The Azumi noble family of the island can summon King Caesar from a statue. The film explains that he once helped Okinawans fend off invaders from the mainland. Extraneous details suggest that King Caesar might not be a creature at all. He may be some kind of construct composed of gold and brick. In any case, he's the permanent defender of Okinawa. Anything that threatens the island might summon King Caesar. Mechagodzilla meets the threshold, bringing the titan to the forefront.

What is King Caesar capable of?

King Caesar is one of the more tactically-minded monsters in Godzilla's entourage. Most of his allies and enemies simply throw themselves at their foes and shoot lasers to finish them off. Godzilla isn't exactly a strategist, but he has found a lot of interesting ways to use his gifts. Caesar is very strong and agile. His leaping ability is celebrated, with some sources claiming he can clear more than 1,000 yards in a single bound. He's also slightly smarter than the average kaiju, wisely using cover to avoid attacks. His mightiest ability is a perfect counter to the usual kaiju technique. Caesar has a crystal structure somewhere inside his skull called the Prism Eye, which can capture and redirect energy. This is a shockingly rare and effective tactic. The reflected version of whatever attack targets Caesar is far more powerful, guaranteeing a terrible fate to anyone who dares to fire a laser at King Caesar. He's a unique threat among his monstrous cohort.

What happened to King Caesar?

King Caesar first appeared in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. He's a strange figure in that film. He is introduced in his natural habitat, sleeping in the cave at Cape Manzamo. The evil Black Hole Planet 3 aliens seek to summon him using the ancient statue, but they can't find it, leading them to send their Mechagodzilla to destroy him. The last remaining member of the Azumi family sang the ancient song that summoned King Caesar. He tangled with Mechagodzilla but failed to match up to the machine. When Godzilla joined the fray, the duo managed to defeat Mechagodzilla. Caesar returned to his cave immediately after his victory. He briefly returns in Godzilla: Final Wars, the 50th anniversary film that brought most classic Godzilla monsters together. Caesar is one of many victims of alien brainwashing, causing him to attack Godzilla with Rodan and Anguirus. Godzilla bests the three of them by tossing Caesar into his temporary allies, incapacitating all three.

King Caesar is one of the most inherently good-natured Godzilla monsters. He's a sworn protector who only covers one small region of Earth. Godzilla often works for or against humanity, but he routinely tasks himself with defending the entire planet. King Caesar has reasonable goals and noble dreams of serving his people. As far as kings go, Caesar is one of the best.
