Summary

  • The Monsterverse's success has led to a sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
  • The Godzilla x Kong sequel has cast its first major star, with the sequel bolstering its ensemble of human characters.
  • There is uncertainty about returning cast members from previous films in the franchise.

The Monsterverse has been a smashing success thanks to its blockbuster monster mash-up of Godzilla vs Kong films. In preparation for its next installment, the franchise is recruiting an A-list star from HBO's The Last of Us.

Legendary Pictures’ Monsterverse began in 2014 with Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla. The franchise introduced its next main player, King Kong, in 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, before the two eventually faced off in 2021’s Godzilla vs Kong. The most recent sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, earned the most of any Monsterverse film with a worldwide box office gross of over $570 million. With those kinds of numbers, a sequel was inevitable. Legendary is currently in development on the next installment in the Monsterverse with David Callaham attached to write and Grant Sputore, a newcomer to the franchise, on board to direct.

The Monsterverse Enlists A New Star

As things move forward on the Godzilla x Kong sequel, Deadline has revealed a major new actor has been attached to the project. Kaitlyn Dever is reportedly in negotiations to star in the new Monsterverse film, with the project supposedly bolstering its human cast of characters, alongside the titular monsters. Dever is known for starring in Booksmart, Dopesick, and will appear as Abby in Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us in 2025.

Will Any Other Cast Members Return For the Godzilla x Kong Sequel?

Dever joins an array of A-list actors who have starred in various Monsterverse movies including, Millie Bobby Brown, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston, Alexander Skarsgard, Vera Farmiga, and Julian Dennison. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire featured the talents of Rebecca Hall, Dan Stevens, and Brian Tyree Henry, but it’s unclear if any of the same actors will return in the sequel. Hall recently told Screen Rant at the Sundance Film Festival that she hadn’t heard anything about the Monsterverse sequel. “No one's asked me, so I don't think I'm in the next one,” she revealed.

The most recent film saw Kong and Godzilla team up to fight the antagonists of Hollow Earth, including Tiamut and the Skar King. After their victory, Godzilla returned to his home on Earth while Kong became the new leader of Hollow Earth’s ape tribe. How the Monsterverse plans to continue this story is unclear, but there is no shortage of legendary titans waiting to be introduced on screen. The only other detail confirmed about the new Monsterverse movie is that it is scheduled to release on March 26, 2027.

Along with another Godzilla x Kong film, Legendary’s Monsterverse will continue to expand in a second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which explores the development of the scientific organization known as Monarch, which tracks and investigates the world’s titans.

The Untitled Godzilla x Kong sequel is scheduled to release on March 26, 2027.
