Grand Theft Auto 5 has reached a new sales milestone, hitting 205 million copies sold since the game first released 11 years ago. The incredible milestone was shared directly by Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of GTA 5 developer Rockstar Games.
GTA 5's success over the years has been dizzying in comparison to the average video game. GTA 5's solid gameplay, potential for chaos, and praised story shared by three protagonists has snared gamers all over the world, many of which still play GTA Online to this day. It seems that GTA 5 continues to do so well that even its parent company is surprised.
Grand Theft Auto 5 Dev Finally Explains the Famous Mount Chiliad Mystery
A former Rockstar developer finally explains the eleven-year-old Mount Chiliad mystery in Grand Theft Auto 5, but it's not the answer fans wanted.
In a recent earnings call with investors, Take-Two Interactive shared a number of new details regarding the company's successes and future direction. GTA 5 was the biggest headliner from its detailing of the second quarter. Take-Two announced that GTA 5 has sold 205 million copies, and that it actually performed better during the quarter than the company had expected. GTA Online also continues to perform well, and the company says that GTA+ memberships are on the rise, seeing a 33% increase in memberships compared to the same time last year.
GTA 5 Is a Huge Part of the Series' Entire Success
Grand Theft Auto has been a massive hit for Rockstar Games since GTA 3 released for the PS2. While there were entries prior to that, it didn't find its foothold with the majority of gamers until the third iteration launched. At this point, the entire GTA series has sold over 435 million copies overall. While that means that most of the titles have performed better than tons of other video games that have come out over the same period of time, the fact that GTA 5 makes up nearly half of all sales of the entire franchise is mind-boggling.
With the release of GTA 6 on the horizon, fans, investors, and even former developers are eager for GTA 6's release. In the meantime, the GTA series isn't the only Rockstar Games icon to do well. Red Dead Redemption 2 also performed well, reaching 67 million units sold since its launch, and still sitting in the top ten for units sales globally according to the GSD. This number may go up as more players get introduced to the series with the recent release of Red Dead Redemption on PC. However, its success is likely bittersweet for fans, as many were hoping to see more from the game's single-player or Red Dead Online components, but Rockstar seems to moved on from the games outside of small updates for the online mode.
