After the record-breaking second trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 hit the internet earlier this week, fans have been obsessed with Jason's backstory, with some theorizing that he may actually be an undercover cop. However, one Grand Theft Auto 6 fan has come up with a new theory that suggests Jason isn't actually a cop, as many people believe, but a special type of "off the books" worker for the police captain.

On May 6, Rockstar Games shocked the world when it released the highly anticipated second trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6. After 500+ days of silence following the release of the game's reveal trailer, fans were dying to know more about one of the most anticipated games in entertainment history. Thankfully, the long wait appeared to have been worth it, as Rockstar not only published almost three minutes of new footage from the title but also a deep dive into the game's characters and locations on its website, with 70 new screenshots for fans to analyze.

GTA 6 Fans Think Jason Is Working With the Cops

With two separate trailers for Grand Theft Auto 6 now available, along with a plethora of screenshots, fans have been speculating on Jason Duval's potential backstory. According to the Rockstar Games website, Jason grew up around grifters and crooks, has had a "stint" in the Army, and now resides in Leonida Keys working for local drug runners. His description also alludes to Jason wanting to "try something new," and many players believe that could be a reference to the protagonist working with the police in Grand Theft Auto 6.

While most fans are convinced that Jason is actually a cop, Reddit user Sidewinda98 has come up with an interesting theory that suggests Jason works with the police captain, but not in the traditional sense. "Maybe the cop sets up drug raids, gives the green light on robberies with Jason’s help off the books in exchange for a cut of the money," the user speculated. They also note that there are numerous moments in the trailer alluding to this, such as the prison officer asking if he knows Jason, as well as a criminal questioning whether or not he is a "fed." Jason can also be seen wearing the same gear in the second trailer as a police officer in the first trailer.

Theories surrounding Jason and Luca will likely continue to circulate for quite some time, as Rockstar Games recently delayed Grand Theft Auto 6 to May 26, 2026. The highly anticipated title was initially set to release in Fall 2025, but the studio says it needs more time to ensure the next Grand Theft Auto game meets the expectations of fans.

Thankfully, the recent trailer, screenshots, and info dump have given fans plenty to digest while they wait for the game's release. Grand Theft Auto 6's second trailer has already broken records, becoming the biggest and fastest-growing video launch in the history of the internet. According to Rockstar Games, the massive trailer has already accumulated over 475 million views across all platforms in just 24 hours.
