Summary

  • Aformer Rockstar animator predicts a delayed release of Grand Theft Auto 6 for PC compared to consoles.
  • Fans express disappointment as the GTA 6 trailer only confirms releases for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
  • The impressive graphics and in-game footage seen in the trailer suggest that GTA 6 will push the limits of current-gen consoles.

The currently unannounced PC version of Grand Theft Auto 6 might take longer to develop than its console brethren, so says a former member of Rockstar Games’ developmental staff. The internet was set ablaze with excitement earlier this week when Rockstar finally released the first trailer for the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6, which revealed the game’s setting, main characters, and 2025 release window. Overall reactions to this trailer were mainly positive, with many of the discussions spawned from it centering around its impressive graphics and intriguing plotline of a Bonnie and Clyde-like couple embarking on a crime wave in modern-day Vice City.

While most players are excited for another entry in the long-running Grand Theft Auto series, not everything about the recent Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer has been warmly received. Fans quickly noted that the trailer only confirmed that GTA 6 is headed to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with PC owners wondering when it will come to their system of choice as well. Rockstar has historically launched PC ports of Grand Theft Auto games several months or even a full year after their console counterparts, and previous GTA 6 leaks from before the trailer’s release have suggested that history will repeat itself.

Images Compare Grand Theft Auto 6 Trailer to Real Life

Players have compared images from the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer to real-life locations and have found striking similarities.

Former Rockstar animator Mike York seems to think that Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch on PC much later than it will on consoles, saying as much in a pair of reaction videos on his YouTube channel. York previously worked on the critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2 before leaving Rockstar in 2017, and he believes that his old employer is focusing its efforts on “pushing the limits” of current-gen consoles before shifting gears toward the eventual PC version of GTA 6.

York also had plenty of praise for the graphical prowess shown in the highly-viewed Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer, especially in the scene where dozens of NPCs are mingling on a beach. He says that background characters in most video games don’t look nearly as impressive as the ones seen in GTA 6 so far, which he thinks is a promising sign of how the game will look when it launches in 2025. York also claimed that everything seen in the GTA 6 trailer was in-game footage rather than the pre-rendered cutscenes that trailers typically employ.

Indeed, Grand Theft Auto 6 looks like it could truly test the boundaries of modern consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and this could lead to the PC version of Rockstar’s latest open-world crime extravaganza taking longer to release. This isn’t out of the ordinary for Rockstar either, as Grand Theft Auto 5’s PC port launched a full year and a half after its console versions and Red Dead Redemption 2 didn’t arrive on PC until a year after its initial release. Only time will tell how long PC owners have to wait to dive into Grand Theft Auto 6, as it is currently set to launch on consoles sometime in 2025.
