Grand Theft Auto 6 is still ten months away from its release date, but gamers can check out a demo for an upcoming fan game called Grand Theft Auto: Carcer City in March. Those who have appreciated Rockstar Games' titles since long before Grand Theft Auto 6 may remember Carcer City, as it was the featured city in a 2003 game from the same developer.
Fans of the Grand Theft Auto series are more than ready to get their hands on the long-awaited sequel. At the moment, the next GTA is set to release in November, but recent rumors have raised concerns that GTA 6 may be further away from being complete than expected. Given that 2026 will mark the 13th year since the release of Grand Theft Auto 5, fans don't want to have to wait any longer than necessary. But if it turns out that GTA 6 is delayed again, Grand Theft Auto: Carcer City may help to tide players over until it finally releases.

Grand Theft Auto: Carcer City Is Getting a Demo
A fan game called Grand Theft Auto: Carcer City is in the works, and a demo is set to release on March 9, 2026. While the GTA series keeps revisiting the same cities, Carcer City brings players to one from Rockstar Games' past, a take on the areas of Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland. The city originally appeared in the 2003 Rockstar North game Manhunt. Grand Theft Auto: Carcer City is a total conversion mod project for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, so players should expect graphics on-par with that game.
The main character in Grand Theft Auto: Carcer City is Liam O'Mulligan, an-ex cop that's been thrown into the criminal underworld. Additional characters include Kenny Gonzales, who shares a common enemy with Liam, as well as Ronald Murphy, who helps Liam to find dirty jobs under the table, and Adam Hanbury, a former colleague and someone who acts as an adviser. The original story of Carcer City takes place around 2001, and features a unique modeled world based off of Carcer City in Manhunt, as well as the overall Grand Theft Auto aesthetic of the San Andreas era.
Grand Theft Auto: Carcer City Could Face Trouble
While the game and its upcoming demo have a lot of GTA fans excited, there is a chance that the game won't make it to players. Numerous Grand Theft Auto modding projects have been shut down in the past by Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games taking steps to protect their intellectual property. Although Carcer City will feature a new story and characters, it could still draw the ire of the original developer and publisher.
To name a few that have been taken down in the past, the GTA Underground mod, which combined existing GTA maps with those of Manhunt and Bully, was shut down in 2021, a GTA 5 AI story mode mod was forced to cease activities in 2023, and the GTA 5 Liberty City Preservation Project mod, which let players revisit GTA 4's map in GTA 5, was forced to go offline in 2025. Given the history, it's entirely possible that Grand Theft Auto: Carcer City could face the same fate in 2026.
While the intent of Rockstar's official developers is to create the best thing ever seen with Grand Theft Auto 6, it's clear that fans of the franchise and Rockstar's other games want to return to areas and stories that have been all but abandoned. Manhunt, L.A. Noire, and Bully are some good examples of this. On the other hand, the Max Payne series, which Rockstar Games owns the rights to, is making a comeback of sorts, as its first two entries are being remade by Remedy Entertainment. However, not much has been said regarding the progress of these remakes since 2024, so it could be some time before they are playable.
