GTA 6 On the Switch 2 May Not Be Pipe Dream After All

The late 2025 release window of Grand Theft Auto 6 is drawing closer and closer, with fans understandably being excited as the decade-plus wait for a new mainline release from the popular Rockstar franchise is finally drawing to a close. Despite the hype, Rockstar is being unusually silent in terms of new trailers or revealing details for the project, but this has not stopped the frequent discussion around the title.

While a huge focus is currently being placed on aspects of Grand Theft Auto 6, such as its release dates between platforms and its pricing, recent developments have raised an interesting question about what other platforms the anticipated project might be available on. Of course, the Nintendo Switch 2 recently had its own long-awaited reveal presentation which captivated large portions of the gaming industry, and the improved hardware and currently confirmed games that will be available on the upcoming console place the concept of GTA 6 on the Switch 2 surprisingly within the realm of possibility.

Nintendo Could Really Make a Statement with Grand Theft Auto 6 on the Switch 2

While the Nintendo Switch leaves behind a legacy as one of the most profitable consoles ever made, there are some clear shortcomings of the hardware that have drawn so much attention to its upcoming successor. Despite the Switch largely being marketed for its on-the-go mobility, the console has developed a reputation over the years for its low level of performance compared to other traditional consoles, with a lot of pressure being placed on the Switch 2 to really move Nintendo past this label going forward.

The recent reveal presentation for the Nintendo Switch 2 on April 2 shed some fascinating light on the kind of hardware that the console will possess, with current reports indicating that the Switch 2 will be around 10 times more powerful than its 2017 predecessor. While it is impossible to make direct comparisons, the power of the Switch 2 is estimated to be roughly equivalent to a PS4 or PS4 Pro, with the already-announced games for the upcoming console already being a good sign for its power.

For example, it was announced that Elden Ring will receive a Nintendo Switch 2 port in 2025, referred to as the Tarnished Edition, with this being a good sign of the upcoming console being able to handle more demanding releases. Other open-world games like Cyberpunk 2077 are also confirmed for Switch 2 releases, with the game's Ultimate Edition being slated as a launch title for the console.

Other confirmed launch titles for the Switch 2 include Mario Kart World, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Hogwarts Legacy, and Yakuza 0: Director's Cut.

Nintendo's Positive Momentum Would Reach a Fever Pitch With a GTA 6 Announcement

These titles come alongside other promising developments, such as Microsoft signing a high-profile contract with Nintendo to eventually bring Call of Duty to the Switch 2, yet there is one big title that the upcoming console is currently silent on. The late 2025 release window for Grand Theft Auto 6 is growing near, with the project predictably shaping up to be one of the most anticipated media releases of all time. The last GTA release for Nintendo hardware was the controversial Definitive Edition trilogy for the Switch in 2021, and a port of GTA 6 for the Switch 2 would be a statement of the increased power of the console, as well as Nintendo's continued venturing into collaboration with more mature titles.

Of course, a Nintendo Switch 2 port of Grand Theft Auto 6 would likely have to make some concessions compared to other releases, but if possible, it could act as the ultimate title to really equalize Nintendo within the massively competitive industry of gaming hardware. With expansive and quite demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring already making their way over to Nintendo's next console, the once outlandish concept of GTA 6 on the Switch 2 seems more and more like a potential reality.
