Upgrading weapons and armor is one of the main ways to get stronger in Grounded 2, as it directly impacts the power level of the player character in a meaningful way. At higher difficulties, fighting off larger insects can become a nightmare without powerful equipment on hand.
Fortunately, upgrading weapons and armor becomes available fairly early on in the game, but unlocking this ability requires completing certain steps that can be easy to miss if players aren’t paying attention. Here’s the breakdown.
How to Upgrade Weapons and Armor in Grounded 2
Weapons and Armor can be upgraded at a Smithing Station using Brittle Whetstones and Brittle Plating, respectively. Brittle Whetstones can be crafted at a Workbench using Brittle Quartzite Shards, which are obtained from Quartzite deposits, whereas Brittle Plating requires Brittle Marble Shards obtained from Marble deposits.
- Upgrading Weapons: Requires 5 Brittle Whetstones per level. Price goes up by 5 for every subsequent upgrade. Increases Damage and Durability by 10% with each upgrade.
- Upgrading Armor: Requires 2 Brittle Plating per level. Price goes up by 2 for every subsequent upgrade. Increases Defense and Durability by 10% with each upgrade.
The recipe for the Smithing Station, Brittle Whetstones, and Brittle Plating becomes available during “The Art of War” main mission, after players expand the Science Shop at the Ranger Station using the TURBO Stolen Optical Disc found in the area guarded by the O.R.C. Northern Scorpion Jr. Players will then be able to purchase the recipe in exchange for 500 Raw Science.
How to Craft Brittle Whetstone and Brittle Plating in Grounded 2
There are two recipes for each of these items. The first recipe is unlocked with the Smithing Station as detailed above, while the second, better recipe requires finding a specific Optical Disc and using it at a Ranger Station.

How to Get Quartzite and Marble in Grounded 2
Quartzite and Marble are fairly uncommon resources in Grounded 2, and finding them is not easy, especially since they cannot be located using the Resource Scanner. Here are the locations of some deposits found early on in the game:
- In the tunnel guarded by the O.R.C. Northern Scorpion Jr.
- Near the glass dome covering the Ominent Facility starting area is an Anthill cave with multiple deposits.
- In the Hatchery Anthill where you find the Red Soldier Ant Egg to incubate your very first Buggy.
- In the Toxic Anthill underneath the Picnic Table.
You will need the Omni-Hammer upgrade to mine Quartzite and Marble.
How to Repair Items in Grounded 2
Weapons and armor have durability in Grounded 2. The more you use them, whether offensively or defensively, the more they will break. Luckily, it is very easy to repair items in this game. Here’s what you need to do:
- Open your Inventory.
- Select the desired item.
- Click the Repair hotkey displayed at the bottom of the screen.
- If you have the required materials to repair, select “Repair.” If not, gather the required materials and try again.
Repairs can be completed on the go and do not require a crafting station like a Workbench in Grounded 2.
