Rockstar has officially delayed Grand Theft Auto 6, meaning that gamers will have to wait at least a little while longer before diving into the nightlife of Vice City. Grand Theft Auto 6 was one of the most anticipated games of 2025, but it now looks like 2026 will be the year GTA's next chapter arrives.

Despite Rockstar delaying the project, there is still a silver lining for eager gamers. There's now a new GTA 6 trailer, and with more time in the oven, the crime-filled adventure has the opportunity to be even better at launch. On top of that, this also likely signals good news for one long-awaited indie title: Hollow Knight: Silksong. The follow-up to the wildly successful Hollow Knight was announced back in 2019, and it's been a long wait as developer Team Cherry has kept mostly silent after a series of delays.

GTA 6 Shook Up This Year's Release Calendar

Although Rockstar hadn't announced an official release date for GTA 6, it was at least previously confirmed that the game was eyeing a fall 2025 launch. Now that this is off the table, the fall release calendar is bound to fill up in the coming weeks and months. During the first quarter of the year, it felt as though a lot of developers were being purposefully silent about their games' respective launch dates in order to avoid releasing around the same time as GTA 6.

GTA 6 stars dual protagonists, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval.

Silksong Has Yet to Confirm a Release Date, But There Are Signs It's Drawing Near

  • Silksong was briefly featured during Nintendo's Switch 2 Direct event.
  • A new Xbox Games Showcase is set to air on June 8.
  • Gamers will actually be able to play Silksong at Australia's ACMI museum in September.

Silksong's short presence at the Nintendo Direct event back in April got a lot of eager gamers hyped. The confirmation that the sequel would be coming to the Switch 2 was an exciting development, but there may be even more thrills on the horizon. The Xbox Games Showcase is set to offer a series of announcements and updates on games. If there was ever a perfect time for Team Cherry to reveal an official release date, it would be this showcase. However, one of the most intriguing developments of all is that Silksong will actually be playable for a select few in September.

Silksong will be part of an official ACMI exhibit in Australia titled "Game Worlds." As the name suggests, the exhibit is focused on art direction and world-building in video games, and a playable version of Silksong will be present. Of course, it could simply be a small demo, but it also suggests that a lot of the game may be complete. If that's the case, the ACMI exhibit might be hinting at a release date set around fall.

The ACMI exhibit runs until February 2026.

Games like Marathon, Borderlands 4, and Ghost of Yotei may have confirmed Q3 and Q4 releases, but much of the latter half of the year is still looking bare. This leaves plenty of room for Silksong to stake its claim as a fall or winter release that is fully free from the overshadowing power of GTA 6.

GTA 6 will now release on May 26, 2026.

All Eyes Are On Silksong

With the Xbox Games Showcase coming up and more breadcrumbs of information trickling out about the game, 2025 almost seems destined to be Silksong's launch year. Of course, this is only speculation, and things can quickly change with game development. Only time will tell, but it would be exciting to see how Silksong fares in a year that isn't taken up by GTA 6.
