Even more than a decade after its initial release, Grand Theft Auto 5 is still managing to top the sales charts, sitting as the best-selling game in Europe in August. The beloved open-world game has seen monumental success for the already massive crime action series, becoming an iconic part of the modern gaming industry. GTA 5 sits just behind Minecraft as the second best-selling video game of all-time, selling over 200 million copies since its 2013 debut. Now, the game has once again topped sales charts in Europe.
Grand Theft Auto 5's sustained popularity over a decade after its launch owes both to its robust campaign and its expansive online mode. GTA 5 was the first Grand Theft Auto game to allow players to control multiple characters during its story mode, allowing fans to play out the stories of Michael, Franklin, and Trevor. GTA Online has also become a staple of modern online gaming, with many popular online servers and a thriving role-playing community. GTA 5's universal popularity has now led to the game becoming August's best-selling game in one region of the world.

As reported by VGC, a new report from popular gaming sales aggregator GamesIndustry confirms that Grand Theft Auto 5 was the best-selling game in Europe last month. GTA 5's success saw the game beat out a pair of notable new releases in Star Wars: Outlaws and Concord, though the latter has seen significant controversy. However, digital sales data was not available for the European release of another major August debut in Black Myth: Wukong. Hogwarts Legacy, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and EA Sports FC 24 also finished in the top 5 best-selling games for August.

The report also shares more information about sales throughout the gaming industry from the month of August. According to the report from GamesIndustry, Europe saw 300,000 consoles sold throughout the region during the month of August, a notable drop of 42% from last year but an improvement from July. The report also confirmed the PS5 as the best-selling console throughout August in Europe, with the Nintendo Switch following behind in second place.
Grand Theft Auto 5's continued relevance in the gaming industry comes as Rockstar has recently begun to give fans more information about the long-rumored GTA 6. Rockstar confirmed earlier this year that it is aiming for a Fall 2025 release for Grand Theft Auto 6, following the blockbuster reveal of the game's first trailer in December. Many fans and critics have already speculated that GTA 6 is poised to break records following its release, owing to the immense amount of hype from the GTA fanbase. GTA 5 continues to be a mainstay for many gamers as more information begins to surface about the franchise's next entry.
