When Does Gundam GQuuuuuuX Take Place?

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX is the latest installment in the franchise, and it is quite a bold one. Focusing on a high school girl and a war refugee in a space colony, it takes place five years after the One Year War between the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation.

However, it is set in an alternate timeline where Zeon won the war — in the original Universal Century timeline, the Earth Federation wins the war, thanks in part to the efforts of Amuro Ray, who pilots the RX-78-2 Gundam. In GQuuuuuuX, Char Aznable captures the RX-78, giving Zeon a great advantage over the Federation.

Do You Need To Know Anything About Gundam To Watch This Series?

GQuuuuuuX tells a story that doesn't require any previous knowledge of the series, since it is set in an alternate reality. However, since it is a rearrangement of the Universal Century, fans who have watched previous series set in the UC, especially Gundam 0079 (the first series), can enjoy this anime even more. Episode 2 even retold many of the events shown in Gundam 0079.

Thus, while it is not a requirement, those who watch either Gundam 0079 or the compilation movies before or after watching GQuuuuuuX will have an enhanced experience with the story.

Where Can You Watch Gundam GQuuuuuuX?

Gundam GQuuuuuuX is streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, subbed and dubbed in English and other languages. The episodes are added simultaneously with the Japanese release.

Gundam seasonal series have usually been released by Crunchyroll, but it could be that Amazon Prime Video had an advantage when offering a licensing deal, since Studio Khara seems to prefer this service over other streaming options (Amazon Prime Video streams all the Rebuild of Evangelion movies, for example).

Gundam GQuuuuuuX i s not only a rearrangement of the timeline of the original series, which is something special in itself, but it is also the first Gundam series to be co-produced by Studio Khara (Rebuild of Evangelion), which was founded by Hideaki Anno himself.

In fact, Anno is involved in this production as a co-writer, and it is the first time he has written a Gundam series — he is a longtime fan of the franchise. However, it seems that this project was actually pitched by Kazuya Tsurumaki, one of the co-directors of Rebuild of Evangelion. It seems that Tsurumaki didn't even expect his pitch to be accepted.
