The overarching theme of Hades 2 is defeating time, with the Titan of Time Chronos himself taking over the Underworld and Olympus. Melinoe must fight the forces of Chronos with the help of the Gods and other deities in order to save her family and friends. Hades 2 is still in early access, so fans will have to wait and see how Melinoe's story will unfold in the future.
Apart from Chronos, the latest Hades 2 update introduces the Titan of Foresight, Prometheus, as the final boss in Olympus. The Titan's role still fits the game's theme, as he also talks to Melinoe about defying time and fate. But just like the Underworld battle against Chronos, Hades 2 has yet to reveal what Melinoe finds in Olympus after defeating Prometheus. While it is likely that Melinoe might see her family and the Olympic Gods in the flesh after each boss fight, it's also possible that a bigger threat might be waiting for her – a group that could be stronger than Time itself.
Melinoe Could Be Facing Her Biggest Battle Yet
Greek mythology is vast and complicated, and Supergiant Games has done a great job of including many known and lesser-known gods and deities in the Hades franchise. Both games have different sets of characters, with some returning for the sequel, but one group has eluded players: the three Fates.
The Fates are three goddesses named Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos, who each represent the past, present, and future of mankind. They are responsible for weaving the threads of destiny for every person, determining the course of their life and death. In the Hades franchise, many characters talk about the Fates, but no one knows where they are, and the goddesses communicate only through the Fated List of Minor Prophecies that enumerates Zagreus and Melinoe's quests. Their absence could be chalked off as them preferring seclusion, but one of the still-locked Fated List quests in Hades 2 requires Melinoe to locate the Three Fates, so they may show up soon.
- Clotho: The youngest of the Fates, who spins the thread of human life using a spindle.
- Lachesis: The one who measures the thread that's spun on Clotho's spindle, representing humans' destiny and the thread of life.
- Atropos: Her function is to cut the threads that the other Fates have spun, representing the definite end of a human's life.
It's unknown if Chronos managed to get a hold of the Fates during his takeover of the Underworld and attack on Olympus, but it is likely that Melinoe will encounter them in her adventures, perhaps after beating either Chronos or Prometheus. The question now is if the Fates' insights are on Melinoe's side, or if they see a bleak future where Chronos cannot be defeated. If it's the latter, then Melinoe might have to go up against fate and potentially change the course of everyone's future.
The concepts of time and fate are often intertwined, and Melinoe proves that she is the "Agent of Change" because she can triumph over both Chronos and Prometheus. But the Fates could be challenging because they create the threads of life and have predetermined everyone's destinies, and it might be worse than what Melinoe would expect despite her efforts to defeat the Titans. This doesn't necessarily mean that the Fates are possibly going to be bad or under Chronos' control, but it's more of having to overturn the destinies they've created, which could prove challenging.
The Fates Could Deliver Interesting Postgame Content in Hades 2
The first Hades game has an interesting epilogue, where Zagreus has to invite the Gods to the Underworld. It's likely that Hades 2 will also go the same route and deliver more post-game content, and the Fates could play an important role in it. With Chronos possibly weakened at the end of the main story, Melinoe could perhaps focus on defying the Fates' schemes to save everyone in the Crossroads, Underworld, and Olympus. These extra missions would be a great way to add more importance to the Fates beyond completing the Fated List quest of finding them.
