Hades 2 is the hotly anticipated sequel to one of the biggest breakout titles of 2020. The first sequel from the critically acclaimed indie developers at Supergiant Games, Hades 2 has enjoyed a massively successful early access period last May on PC before expanding its reach to Mac in October. Now, over a year after its initial early access release, the title is finally gearing up for its full release later this year.

Among other recent announcements, Supergiant Games has confirmed that Hades 2 will be a console launch exclusive to both iterations of the Nintendo Switch. This shouldn’t be too big of a surprise for longtime fans, as the original Hades launched on the Switch alongside its full release back in 2020. Still, its announcement does raise a major question regarding the future of Hades on other platforms.

Hades 2 is home to a plethora of impactful Boons, but there's one Greek God who deserves a proper spot on the roster in the lead-up to Hades 2 1.0.

Hades 2’s Timed Exclusive Release Raises Questions For Xbox And PlayStation

Hades 2 Is Currently Unconfirmed For Any Consoles Outside Of Nintendo

With Hades 2 set to begin its full-release life on the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2, questions will naturally arise about its availability on other consoles. Of course, the first Hades game was eventually released on PlayStation and Xbox consoles within a year of its initial release, and it was even released on Xbox Game Pass as well. Furthermore, Supergiant Games has indicated its desire to release the new game on other consoles alongside Nintendo’s platforms.

That said, because Supergiant has not confirmed what platforms the game will release on, questions will arise about what generation of consoles Hades 2 will launch on. The first game launched on both current-gen and last-generation PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and even five years after the release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One regularly get new releases. Thus, it remains to be seen whether Supergiant Games will focus on current-gen devices or also offer last-gen versions to players who haven’t upgraded yet.

Hades 2’s Switch 1 Release May Indicate Last-Gen And Current-Gen PlayStation/Xbox Releases

While it’s fair to assume that Hades 2 could skip the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One altogether in favor of newer devices, Supergiant Games could very well bring this new game to last-generation machines. After all, despite being a fast-paced game, Hades 2 is likely not going to be technically demanding enough that it can only function on current-generation devices. Given how the first game succeeded by being available on many different devices, Supergiant Games may find it best for its business to have last-generation versions ready in case fans have not upgraded to Sony or Microsoft’s newer machines.

After all, while Hades 2 will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2, it’s not skipping the original Nintendo Switch. While this may well be a result of the original game launching on the Switch, and perhaps a safety net to ensure Nintendo players can enjoy the game regardless of whether they upgrade to the new device, it’s a sign that the game can play well enough on an “outdated” piece of hardware. If Supergiant is willing to commit to releasing on the Nintendo Switch, the team could very well push for last-generation Xbox and PlayStation releases as well.

Hades 2’s Xbox And PlayStation Releases May Still Be A Way Out

Perhaps the more pertinent question for fans regarding Hades 2 is not whether it releases on last-gen machines, but when Xbox and PlayStation players will get to play it. Currently, the game’s proper release date has not been announced, though judging by the release pattern of the first Hades game, the Xbox and PlayStation versions arrived just under 11 months after the PC, Mac, and Switch releases. If the pattern holds up, PlayStation and Xbox gamers should get their hands on Hades 2 sometime in 2026.

Hades 2 remains one of the most hotly anticipated games of 2025, but it remains to be seen how many systems it will release on. If nothing else, the release of a Nintendo Switch version, even in the wake of the Nintendo Switch 2’s release, indicates that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players might not be left in the dust when the game arrives on Sony and Microsoft consoles.
