Summary
- Characters in Hades 2 offer players diverse stories and potential romance options.

- The addition of engaging conditions for romancing characters like Thanatos could enhance the gameplay experience in Hades 2.
Hades 2 has many characters that Melinoe will encounter throughout her journey. The personalities she meets all have their own charm and story, making players continually interact with them in the hopes of learning more. Besides getting to know them, there are a few in which Melinoe can form bonds beyond friendship. This means there are several romanceable characters in Hades 2, and it's up to the players to find out who. While some are already established as possible romantic partners, there is one that, should the character return, may be quite difficult to create such a relationship with.
Several cast members in Hades 2 can get romantically involved with Melinoe, with the possibility of more coming. One character that may return as a potential romantic partner is Thanatos, the embodiment of death and one of the more popular entities Zagreus could get intimate with in the previous game. While some would jump on the opportunity to form a relationship with the character yet again, the sequel could make it much harder for players. The conditions for meeting Thanatos in the original Hades were already somewhat difficult to meet, and the developers could choose to keep it that way while adding a few new twists. If that happens, then it's likely the character will be the hardest to romance out of anyone.
Comparing Hades 2's Dora with the Orignal's Dusa
Dora from Hades 2 and Dusa from the previous game have several qualities that many players can't help but compare between them.
Why Thanatos Could Be Hard to Romance in Hades 2
Romancing Thanatos in the original Hades can be considered quite a challenge to some, as even clearing the conditions to meet him doesn't guarantee it will happen. In the previous game, players had to encounter Alecto or Tisiphone, characters who only appear by chance, before Thanatos becomes encounterable. After that, the character will only spawn in the game's 3rd biome, with only a 1 in 10 chance of appearing per chamber. This shows that Thanatos cannot easily be romanced, and the developers may make it even harder for players to do so in the sequel. Should he ever return as a romantic interest, there may be new possible conditions that may need to be met before Melinoe can get intimate with him, such as:
- Players may need to beat Chronos, as the Titan of Time stated that he locked those that belonged to the House of Hades in a permanent moment.
- Similar to the previous game, Thanatos may only be encountered in a certain region with very little chance of spawning.
- Chronos could use him in his war against Olympus, possibly requiring Melinoe to defeat him before becoming an interactable character in the game's hub world.
If Supergiant Games is going to double down on Melinoe's romanceable characters, then adding more interesting characters like Thanatos is the way to go. Although it could prove difficult to unlock him to start the romancing process, it may be worth it if the developers make the process interesting and enjoyable.
Why More Characters Should Have Conditions Like Thanatos’ Before Romance
Romancing the characters of Hades 2 is as simple as talking to them, giving them gifts, and enjoying a bath or fishing with them. While it is easy, the process can get quite monotonous. Although the conditions that need to be met before Thanatos becomes interactable can be considered intrusive by some, it was at least engaging and different enough to make him feel unique compared to the rest. Supergiant Games could give other characters the same treatment, with Heracles being a good candidate as he already has a random spawn chance as a surface encounter. If done right, certain romantic prospects in the sequel could become enjoyable events that players will look forward to, maybe even making them more memorable than those in the original Hades.
While there is no way to confirm the returning characters in Hades 2 who can be romanced, there is hope for someone like Thanatos. Being one of Zagreus' potential lovers and now possibly Melinoe's, it would be a shame if the Supergiant Games didn't bring him back, as he could create interesting developments. Whether he will be hard to romance or not, his addition could enhance the game and many players would likely appreciate his return.
