Halo is one of the best first-person shooter franchises around, and it has been a winner with fans ever since Halo: Combat Evolved was released in 2000. All these games allow players to take control of Master Chief to battle through hordes of aliens using any guns or vehicles they can get their hands on.

Halo TV Show Grabs
Halo: Best Things The TV Show Has Done So Far

The Halo TV show has surprised many fans of the games, thanks to the elements of the franchise that it gets right.

Halo has always featured a large variety of weapons, and each one is just as useful as the last. Many great weapons debuted in Halo: Combat Evolved, and are still featured in the main series today. That is because all of these weapons are iconic in their own right and have left a significant impact on gaming history.

7 Plasma Pistol

An Easy Weapon To Find With Hundreds Of Uses

Halo Plasma Pistol
  • First Encountered: The Pillar of Autumn

The Plasma Pistol is a small weapon carried by many of the weaker Covenant forces, so it is quite common throughout Halo levels. These guns fire a small burst of green plasma at the enemy but don't do much damage. The rate of fire is quite impressive though, therefore, players can always use one of these in a pinch to take things out.

Where the Plasma Pistol shines is in its charge function. By holding down the fire button for a few seconds, players can charge the Plasma Pistol to fire out one large powerful shot. Of course, charging a Plasma Pistol leaves the player vulnerable for a few seconds but it is a useful way to take out enemy shields and get damage on larger enemies.

6 Sniper Rifle

An Option For Stealthy Players

Halo Sniper Rifle
  • First Encountered: Halo

Like with many FPS games, Halo gives the player many options when trying to take on their enemies. Players can charge in and use brute force to dispatch groups of Covenant, or they can sit back and pick off targets one by one. To do this, they will need a Sniper Rifle.

The Sniper Rifle in Halo: Combat Evolved is powerful enough to kill most targets with one to two shots, and it comes fitted with night vision so that the enemies will have a hard time hiding from a stealth attack. Almost every Halo game in the series has featured a Sniper level to show off the stealth mechanics, with this weapon slowly evolving in every new entry. Ammo for this weapon can be scarce, and it is nearly useless when fighting the waves of The Flood in later levels.

5 M-90 Shotgun

A Powerful Weapon To Use At Short Range

Halo Shotgun
  • First Encountered: The Flood

When the player first embarks on the sixth level in Halo: Combat Evolved, they will need to be prepared. That is because this is the first level that includes The Flood as a new type of enemy. Unlike The Covenant, The Flood is an enemy in the game that comes in a variety of different forms and will barrage the player with a never ending stream of melee attacks. Fortunately, the M-90 Shotgun is given to players during this level, and it is great for getting rid of the undead foes.

A frightening enemy type in the Halo series is the Flood, and here is a ranking of every form from weakest to most powerful.

The Shotgun fires an impressive burst of shrapnel at the enemy and can do considerable damage at close range. While the M-90 Shotgun is a very situational weapon and one that can be difficult to keep loaded, it is worth using in some of the later levels of the game.

4 Magnum Pistol

The First Weapon In The Game Has Some Powerful Shots

Halo Magnum Pistol
  • First Encountered: The Pillar Of Autumn

The Magnum Pistol is the first gun that players will ever use in the Halo series, and it is given to players by Captain Keyes when they complete the movement tutorial. It doesn't look like the most impressive weapon, and most players will normally ditch this handy weapon as soon as they find something that appears more substantial. However, anyone who sticks with the Magnum in Halo: Combat Evolved will find it very useful.

The Pistol in the first game is extremely powerful and it has the power to kill most enemies in either one or two headshots. Also, its high rate of fire means that players can keep using this weapon in tight situations, and its zoom scope makes it viable at long range. Sadly, Bungie nerfed this weapon going forward in the series and it acts more like a standard sidearm in any other FPS. Still, the Magnum Pistol remains one of the easiest weapons to find and use in the franchise.

3 Rocket Launcher

Best For Taking Out Vehicles

Halo Rocket Launcher
  • First Encountered: The Silent Cartographer

With Halo featuring some great guns and melee weapons over the years, it is easy for players to forget that the series also features some very powerful vehicles. These heavy targets can take a lot of damage, and Halo: Combat Evolved did not include the hijack feature for players to take command of enemy vehicles. As such, they will need a powerful weapon to make it through vehicle-heavy levels like Assault on the Control Room.

Fortunately, the Rocket Launcher is a handy tool that players can use to take out anything in just a few explosive shots. This two-barrel launcher can only carry up to six rounds at a time, but it is necessary for defeating large enemy tanks and ships from a distance. It can even clear out hunters with ease. This Rocket Launcher has had a few upgrades since its debut and is almost useless when fighting small enemies or The Flood. However, it is always worth keeping one nearby.

2 Needler

A Gun With A Million Possibilities

Halo Needler
  • First Encountered: Halo

The Needler is one of the more unique weapons in gaming history. These spiky weapons are used by The Covenant, and they auto-fire deadly rounds of pink crystals that can home-in on their target. These crystals also have a delay before exploding. Their rate of fire is impressive and it is almost impossible to avoid a barrage of shots from one of these guns.

The Needler has a wide variety of uses. Players who use a Needler can choose to sit back and pepper the enemy with shots, knowing that their weapon will always hit and do damage to their target. Alternatively, players can quickly fire dozens of shots at one enemy and they will stick to the target. This will result in a huge explosion that will instantly kill that enemy and any other enemies standing near them like they were hit by a grenade.

1 Assault Rifle

The Most Useful Weapon In The Franchise

Halo Assault Rifle
  • First Encountered: The Pillar of Autumn

The Assault Rifle is one of the most common and iconic weapons in the series, and for good reason. This automatic rifle is found on the first level in the series, and it is the gun that Master Chief is normally pictured with in promotional materials. It is a simple weapon that will fire quick bursts of bullets at the enemy. Players can use the Assault Rifle to mow down corridors of weaker enemies or concentrate much of their fire on one strong enemy continuously.

Another bonus of the Assault Rifle is that ammo for this gun is readily scattered about each level, so players will always have access to it. Bungie may have made a mistake when not including the Assault Rifle in Halo 2, and players noticed the weapon's absence. The developers quickly recognized this mistake and the Assault Rifle has accompanied Master Chief since.
