The developers behind Halo are reportedly growing worried about being replaced by AI in the future. Microsoft has been bullish about the technology for a long time now, a trend that may seem increasingly worrisome amid its latest round of layoffs. As more news keeps coming out about the cutbacks, it seems some Halo devs think AI may jeopardize their future at the company.

Microsoft is in the middle of a massive staff reduction. On top of thousands of employees losing their jobs, the move has resulted in several canned projects, with Rare's Everwild getting canceled and Romero Games losing funding for the title it was working on. The sweeping cost-reduction measures may have also reignited fears about the impact of AI on Xbox's workforce.

Halo Studios reportedly suffers layoffs as Microsoft relies more on contracted studios
Halo Studios Reportedly Hit by Microsoft Layoffs in Move Toward Contracted Studios

The latest round of sweeping Microsoft Layoffs reportedly hits Halo Studios amid a trend of relying more heavily on contracted developers.

In a conversation with Engadget, an unnamed Halo Studios developer expressed several concerns about the workplace's management lately, including an increasing reliance on AI. According to the dev, Microsoft is attempting "to replace as many jobs as they can with AI agents." It had previously come out that the company was pushing employees to use its AI assistant, Copilot, in their workflows, and leadership has not been shy about its aspirations for AI-generated games. CEO Satya Nadella has suggested that Xbox may generate entire games with AI down the road, in addition to using AI-generated elements in otherwise human-made titles.

Halo Studios Dev Says Microsoft Is Trying to Replace Jobs With AI

The true extent of Microsoft's plans for AI and how it relates to the workforce is harder to pinpoint. This news suggests the company is aggressive about moving toward automation over human developers, but it's unclear how much of that is stemming from a place of job anxiety amid the layoffs and how much is accurate. Microsoft's recent history does indicate a strong shift toward AI, though. Nadella's comments aside, the company released an AI-generated Quake 2 demo earlier this year, inciting considerable fan backlash.

As AI's capabilities have grown, so too have worries over how it will affect the future of human jobs in the gaming industry. Fans have largely condemned the use of generative AI in games, and publishers like EA and Take-Two have expressed concern over AI's dubious ethics in response. Still, other major players in the sector, including Microsoft, appear committed to capitalizing on the technology. How far that will go, especially in terms of developer jobs, remains to be seen.
