Even just during the events of the main Harry Potter series and games such as Hogwarts Legacy, Hogwarts sees its fair share of good and bad Headmasters and Headmistresses. However, with many capable characters, organizers, and strict but fair disciplinarians throughout the franchise, there are a number of witches and wizards who would have doubtlessly led Hogwarts well.

While some of these candidates for Headmaster or Headmistress of Hogwarts are already Professors, others work in the Ministry of Magic, or were mere students during the series.
1 Hermione Granger
Highly Intelligent, Capable, & A Great Organizer
One of the most obvious characters who would have eventually made a good Headmistress of Hogwarts is Hermione Granger. While in the lore following on from the books, she never became a professor, she very much had the qualities to become one, and would doubtless have risen to the headship one day.
Instead, Hermione chose a role in politics, becoming the Minister for Magic at a relatively young age. This proves she had the talent and ambition to achieve anything, and for a role in teaching or even leading a school, many skills could have transferred over. Over the course of the books and films, Hermione Granger showed herself to be extremely intelligent, great at organizing, and from time to time, she even disciplined Harry and Ron.
2 Professor Matilda Weasley
Pretty Much Ran The School As Headmistress
During the events of Hogwarts Legacy in the late 19th century, it is Sirius' ancestor, Phineas Nigellus Black, who reigns as Headmaster of Hogwarts. However, he is famously the most despised Headmaster in the history of the school up until that point, and fairly incapable, as well as utterly uninterested in the role.

Harry Potter has proved himself as a talented wizard thanks to his use of powerful spells in and out of Hogwarts that have rivaled even Voldemort.
Nevertheless, the school still runs perfectly well, largely thanks to the efforts of Deputy Headmistress Professor Matilda Weasley and the other Hogwarts Legacy professors. It is Professor Weasley who takes care of the game's main character, and it is she who leads the school in mourning at the end. Overall, she is warm-hearted, slightly intimidating, and a great role model, perfectly capable of leading the school had she officially been called on to become Headmistress.
3 Barty Crouch Senior
If Hogwarts Ever Needed To Be Set Right, He'd Be The Man For The Job
Bartemius Crouch Senior, who featured in The Goblet of Fire, was a highly capable man with impeccable attention to detail. Before and during the First Wizarding War, and crucially before the drama involving his son, Barty Crouch Senior was tipped to become Minister for Magic.
While he was too ruthless and strict for some, had Hogwarts ever needed a complete turnaround, he would have been up to the job. In fact, when the Ministry sought to interfere in Hogwarts and made the awful appointment of the evil Professor Umbridge, Barty Crouch Sr would have been a much better option, had he still been alive. While life at Hogwarts under him would likely have been authoritarian, the standard of teaching would likely have been raised, and both grades and discipline would have been improved.
4 Professor Sprout
Respected By All & She Believed In The Importance Of Education
While not too much is known about Professor Sprout's demeanor, even in the books, she seems to be fully respected by both staff and students at Hogwarts and was perfectly capable in her position as Professor of Herbology. If Professor McGonagall had decided to retire after all the chaos of the last book, and not have become permanent Headmistress of Hogwarts, Professor Sprout would have been a likely candidate and done well.
As a hardworking and friendly Hufflepuff with experience leading her house, it's hard to see her failing in the position. She also put great emphasis on education and the students, stating that the school should be kept open even if just one student were to remain in the aftermath of Dumbledore's death.
5 Professor Horace Slughorn
Would Have Been Great At Recruiting The Best Teachers
Professor Horace Slughorn is often seen as a character who favors certain students too much. However, while this may be true, this doesn't appear to have made him biased when it comes to awarding grades or disciplining. Politically savvy and well-connected, Slughorn would likely have been adept at recruiting the best teachers, which is important given the notoriously difficult task of filling the cursed Defense Against the Dark Arts position.
His years of experience would have helped to keep Hogwarts running smoothly, and students would have been incentivized to do well to climb into his graces. It's easy to imagine him delivering engaging speeches at the start of term and on other big occasions.
6 Percy Weasley
After Maturing, His Skills Could Have Helped Him Lead A School
Percy was a natural prefect and headboy, but craved power and authority a tad too much, and his idolization of the Ministry made him blind to their shortcomings. However, he eventually saw the error in his ways, quitting his job in the last book and returning to fight alongside the Order of the Phoenix and his family.
In the years after, his attention to detail and commitment to work could have helped him become a professor at Hogwarts had he wished. He already excelled at keeping others in check and certainly would have still had enough ambition in him to rise to the top one day.
