Over a decade since the last Harry Potter movie premiered, and the series is already getting the reboot treatment. But while many fans may hope to see the legacy actors return as their favorite characters, Daniel Radcliffe has responded to one rumor.
Considering the increasing controversies surrounding Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, news of rebooting the Harry Potter franchise happened too soon. The writer's comments on social media have not endeared her to fans, so much so that even the Hogwarts Legacy game was coming under fire because of it. But Discovery Plus' merger with HBO Max has opened a new world of streaming possibilities. The reboot will reportedly be adapted as a full-length series, delving into aspects not covered in the feature films. Harry Potter is only one of these recent reboot considerations. Supernatural romance Twilight concluded even more recently than Harry Potter and will also have a second life.
Because the Harry Potter franchise is barely in the rearview mirror, the reboot could include actors from previous movies. But as far as Radcliffe is concerned, he’s more than happy to take a step back from the upcoming project. "I'm definitely not seeking it out in any way,” Radcliffe confirmed in an exclusive interview with ComicBook.com. “But I do wish them, obviously, all the luck in the world and I'm very excited to have that torch passed. But I don't think it needs me to physically pass it."
Radcliffe's diplomatic answer is not a surprise. The Miracle Workers actor further explained that the Harry Potter reboot wasn’t eager to include him in the series either. With a new generation of Potter fans to entertain, all information suggests that this project will be different from the previous, and creatives are looking to make something of their own. Radcliffe has always been transparent in his interviews, and this statement is understandable. Though he loved making the Harry Potter reunion special, it wasn't a sign that he would return to the franchise.
Since last appearing as The Boy Who Lived, Radcliffe has done his utmost to make his mark in his career. Recently, he has appeared in eccentric films meant to make a statement. Recent ventures feature him having guns for hands in Guns Akimbo and playing the titular parody singer in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Radcliffe appears to like surprising his audience, and appearing in another Harry Potter project would contradict that. Throw in doubts if this is the time for a new Harry Potter franchise, and the whole idea is a non-starter.
For many, Radcliffe was the definitive portrayal of The Chosen One. Rehashing a series that meant so much to fans who were Harry Potter's age when first reading it isn’t just tactless: it’s disrespectful. Several IPs are primed for the taking, but Harry Potter is hallowed ground.
The Harry Potter reboot is expected to premiere on Max in 2025 or 2026.
