Hearthstone is bringing back the Heroic Tavern Brawl with a new twist that many players are not happy about. The highly-competitive Tavern Brawl is returning to Hearthstone for a limited time, but many believe the rewards are not worth the high risk of the game mode.
The Tavern Brawl is a special game mode in Hearthstone with a rotating weekly schedule full of wacky, unique rules. For winning their first match in a given week, Hearthstone players can earn a free card pack.
The Heroic Tavern Brawl, also called the Heroic Brawliseum, is a special Tavern Brawl that usually comes once an expansion. This Tavern Brawl gives players the chance to win up to 50 packs, 1100 Gold and Dust, and three Golden Legendary cards. However, these rewards don’t come cheap–buying into the contest costs 1000 gold or $10. To get the most rewards, players must win 12 matches before losing 3 times. But this time, Hearthstone is offering a new skin for the Death Knight class for players who get at least three wins.
While this may seem like an easy task, the Heroic Brawliseum is an extremely competitive mode. Because of the potential rewards, many highly-skilled Hearthstone players enter the contest with their best decks. Though players can buy into the Brawliseum with in-game currency, even winning one or two matches can be challenging without excellent strategies, making the new Ghoul Queen Scarlet skin extremely hard to get.
Many Hearthstone players already had issues with the Heroic Brawliseum. With the current reward structure, players must win at least five matches to break even on their 1000 Gold investment. Unlike Hearthstone's Rewards Track, the Heroic Tavern Brawl rewards structure isn't shown in game, so players cannot easily weigh the risks and rewards of the competitive game mode.
The exclusive skin will likely drive more novice players to attempt the Heroic Tavern Brawl without realizing how hard it is to win, depriving them of their hard-earned gold right before Hearthstone releases its mini-set for March of the Lich King. Many hope Hearthstone changes its mind and rewards the new skin to all players who buy into the Heroic Tavern Brawl, even if they lose all their matches as an incentive to try it out, or at least give players a free entry into the event. At the very least, Hearthstone is giving players a free pack during the week of the Heroic Brawliseum, so those who don’t participate won’t lose out on the normal Tavern Brawl pack.
Hearthstone is available now for Mobile and PC.
