Helldivers 2: Is The Breaker Spray & Pray Worth Getting?

There is a wide variety of primary weapons in Helldivers 2, giving players plenty of options to dispense freedom with. Most of these weapons also have different variations that often specialize in one role at the expense of others.

The Breaker Spray & Pray is one such specialized weapon. It's a variant of the Breaker shotgun, one of the best primary weapons in Helldivers 2, and on launch, this weapon was seen as mostly useless. However, Patch 1.000.100 breathed some new life into the Spray & Pray, giving it the love it needed to be an effective gun in very close quarters. The community dubbed the Spray & Pray as the worst weapon in the game as it was incapable of penetrating the armor anything bigger than a Terminid Scavenger. As of Helldivers 2's first balance patch, the gun received significant buffs to its lethality, raising its stats to the following:

Is The Breaker Spray & Pray Any Good?

The weapon's main job is to clear groups of weaker enemies like Scavengers, Warriors, and Raiders. It can kill big, soft targets like Spewers and Brood Commanders relatively quickly too, though it can't punch through medium armor. The Spray &Pray's shot spread is much wider than that of the regular Breaker, which means it can hit more targets per shot. However, this also means the weapon isn't as effective at medium range due to all the pellets missing their intended targets.

The buff to this weapon truly made it fulfill that spray and pray fantasy. It works best against the Terminids, where targets tend to clump up together. Specifically, it is very good against Hunter swarms, as these bugs have fairly low health compared to Warriors and Brood Guards. A few stray pellets is enough to put a Hunter down, preventing it from flanking the team.

The Spray & Pray is far from the best weapons to use against Automatons in Helldivers 2. Raiders don't tend to group up as tightly, and most of them fight from medium range where the shotgun's spread pattern is at its weakest. To make things worse, the Spray & Pray is horrible against Devastators as it can neither pierce armor nor can it hit their small weakspots reliably.

Overall, the Breaker Spray & Pray is a solid weapon that's best used versus Terminids. The large magazine size, manageable recoil, wide shot spread, and respectable damage output make it a terrific gun against bugs, but its lack of armor penetration and low range make it a less-than-ideal choice against bots.
