Following a blizzard in Helldivers 2, a player took to social media to post a clip of their trek through the snowstorm in an exosuit that reminded them of the opening credits scene from Square Enix's Final Fantasy 6. The Helldivers 2 player then expressed their wish for a remake of Final Fantasy 6, which sparked debates among other players.
Considered one of the all-time best JPRGs, Final Fantasy 6 celebrated its 30th anniversary in April 2024. Originally released on the SNES, Final Fantasy 6 has since seen re-releases on modern platforms as part of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster compilation. Featuring an ensemble cast of characters, such as Terra, Locke, Sabin, and Celes, and the unforgettable villain Kefka Palazzo, both the plot and the music of FF6 have remained fan-favorites within the Final Fantasy franchise. Though Final Fantasy 6 has not been rumored to be getting a remake, other titles such as the speculated Final Fantasy 9 remake have made the rounds.
While Helldivers 2 has little in common with the Final Fantasy franchise, one player shared a moment that gave them a sense of nostalgia. On Reddit, a Helldivers 2 player named Hawk071 shared a short video from their TikTok page on the r/FinalFantasy subreddit. In the 15-second video, Hawk071 changed the background music to "Terra's Theme" from Final Fantasy 6 for emphasis. As a blizzard began to subside, Hawk071 and one of their teammates were piloting EXO-45 Patriot Exosuits on their way to raise Super Earth's flag at a nearby point. With "Terra's Theme" playing during the clip, the Exosuit march was seen as a reference to the opening credits of Final Fantasy 6. This prompted Hawk071 to use the clip as a wish for a remake of Final Fantasy 6.
Helldivers 2 Player Compares Snowy Battle To Final Fantasy 6's Opening
At the beginning of Final Fantasy 6, an enslaved Terra is joined by two Imperial Magitek soldiers, Biggs and Wedge, as they march in their Magitek Armor through the snowy terrain of Narshe. During their trek, a lower-pitched version of "Terra's Theme" played, and the credits appeared toward the top of the screen. The opening concluded as Narshe came into view. In response, Final Fantasy fans debated over how they would envision a Final Fantasy 6 remake. While a few jokingly responded by stating it could be split into multiple parts like the Final Fantasy 7 Remake saga, others pointed to the HD-2D styles used in Octopath Traveler and similar games as a safe bet.
Just as Helldivers 2 is shifting its update cycle, Square Enix is adjusting to a multiplatform release strategy for future titles. Only time will tell if a remake of Final Fantasy 6 will be a part of the latter.
