Helldivers 2 started the year off with a surprising bang, as the third-person shooter turned out to be an unexpected hit. Steeped in witty satire and hardcore action, Helldivers 2 highlights the absurdity of an authoritarian society in an incredibly fun way. The titular Helldivers are super-soldiers tasked with facing deadly bug-like aliens called Terminids and the robotic Automatons, all in the name of "managed democracy".
As one of the biggest live service games at the moment, Helldivers 2 has yet to follow in the footsteps of other games in the genre by embracing crossovers. Crossovers in Helldivers 2 may not be part of the game's future plans, as developer Arrowhead Game Studios has stated in the past that it would only consider a crossover if it was in line with the game's lore. Although these criteria leave a lot of games out of the running to be featured in a collaboration, the perfect crossover for Helldivers 2 will unfortunately likely never happen; Halo.
Halo Would Be a Perfect Helldivers 2 Crossover, But It Will Likely Never Happen
Halo and Helldivers 2 Showcase Similar Themes in Different Ways
Halo may not be a tongue-in-cheek satire like Helldivers 2, but both games focus on humanity facing an otherworldly threat. The threat of the multi-alien race group known as The Covenant threatens the safety of human society in Halo, which is something Helldivers 2 is deeply familiar with. Factions in Helldivers 2 bring some harrowing non-human enemies onto the battlefield, so it wouldn't be too far-fetched for a special in-game event to feature races in The Covenant, like Grunts and Elites.
Furthermore, both Halo and Helldivers 2 put their focus on the duty of being a super soldier. The main difference is that Master Chief was raised for the purpose of being the perfect killing machine, while the Helldivers in Helldivers 2 are expendable citizens being swayed by propaganda. However, the armor of both the Helldivers and Master Chief have some similarities, making the possibility of a Master Chief armor set in Helldivers 2 and a Helldiver skin in Halo Infinite not too far-fetched of an idea.
A Halo event in Helldivers 2 would offer a treasure trove of Halo-inspired Stratagem options, like the Warthog or Ghost.
Why a Halo/Helldivers 2 Crossover is Probably Wishful Thinking
Unfortunately, Helldivers 2's perfect crossover will probably never happen simply because it's published by Sony, while Halo is an Xbox exclusive. Unless Helldivers 2 finally gets an Xbox release or Halo comes to PlayStation, any potential collaboration is pretty much impossible at this point. The exclusivity of both franchises has currently erected a wall between a crossover event, but all hope may not be lost.
A major talking point this year involved Halo potentially branching out to other platforms in the future. Similarly, there has also been plenty of speculation that Helldivers 2 might eventually get an Xbox release. As of now, this is unconfirmed, but it would be huge if it turned out to be true. If both games are given the chance to be released on their rival platforms, then the door would be wide open for a crossover between Halo and Helldivers 2.
Arrowhead Game Studios has made it clear that it would take a specific franchise to warrant a crossover, and Halo is the perfect option. Even if it's just a one-off event, it could be a fantastic fit. Halo Infinite players have already created a mode inspired by Helldivers 2, so the demand is clearly there. If rumors about Helldivers 2 coming to Xbox are ever proven to be true, a Halo crossover event would be one of the best ways to welcome the third-person shooter to Microsoft's roster.
