Commando missions in Helldivers 2 are set deep behind enemy lines (deeper than usual, that is), and without the support of Super Destroyers, players will be left to mostly fend for themselves against unending hordes of freedom-hating enemies. Unlike your regular romp through the battlefield, Commando missions focus on stealth, which means no big bombs and no big gunfights (for the most part). However, enemy compositions remain the same, which begs the question: what should you bring during stealth missions? This guide explores some of the best options you have when doing Commando Operations in Helldivers 2, including the best gear players can use even if they don't own specific Warbonds.
As of writing, Commando Missions are only available against Automatons. Our recommendations below are all suited for fighting this faction specifically.
Best Stratagems for Commando Operations in Helldivers 2
|
Stratagem |
Why is it Good? |
|---|---|
|
Jump, Warp, and Hover Packs |
Great for escaping enemies and sneaking behind bases via walls and ledges. |
|
Supply Pack |
You can't call-in Resupply pods without your Super Destroyer. Great for demolition missions. |
|
Quasar Cannon |
Reliable Anti-Tank and building destroyer with infinite ammo. |
|
Recoilless Rifle |
Deals more damage than the Quasar Cannon, but has limited ammo. |
|
Airburst Rocket Launcher |
Use this to destroy big chunks of clustered enemies, particularly ones that can call for reinforcements. |
|
Orbital Laser |
Clears out bases and enemy reinforcements. |
|
Exosuits |
Also used for clearing out bases and big enemy hordes. |
|
C4 Pack |
Best used for destroying outposts and objectives like Anti-Air Guns without alerting enemies. |
These Stratagems are great for Commando Operations, but you'll need to have an actual strategy in mind. You can't bring all of these by yourself, so only pick the ones that will help your game plan come to fruition. Below are three different strategies that we've found the most success with so far:
The Hot Drop Strategy
- Drop near an objective or enemy base, then unleash hell before disappearing into the shadows
This strategy involves making use of the one-minute grace period you get before the Super Destroyer leaves orbit at the start of a mission. Drop near a big area like a main objective or an Automaton Fortress, then call-in your Orbital Laser, Exosuit, and support weapons. You'll be able to clear out most enemies with your laser and Exosuit, and once you've finished your business, leave the Exosuit, grab your preferred support equipment, and disappear before the enemy can track you down. Always go for enemies calling reinforcements first.
This is a very risky strategy, but it's also very rewarding. You'll have one more chance to do this later on too.
The Guerilla Strategy
- Focus on using hit-and-run tactics with explosive weapons to quickly clear bases
Here, we'll be using one of the Helldivers 2 community's most hated support weapons: the Airburst Rocket Launcher. The idea is to use airburst cluster munitions to quickly take out big groups of enemies. The Autocannon firing Flak ammo or the Recoilless Rifle with HE ammo can work too. You'll have a decently good chance of clearing an enemy base with these weapons without giving them a chance to call for reinforcements. All the noise you'll make will likely attract nearby patrols to your location, so hit hard, and hit fast, and for the love of liberty, kill the smaller targets before they can call for their friends.
The Airburst Rocket Launcher is very risky to use, and success with it will likely depend on how well you can engage from a distance. If you're on a planet like Clasa that contains a lot of short sightlines, it'll be better if you bring an Autocannon or Grenade Launcher instead. Use team reloads as much as possible.
Pure Stealth Strategy
- We're going in all sneaky-beaky like
This is the complete opposite of the other two strategies, and it is also the hardest to pull off. Here, you'll be relying on mobility with Jump/Warp/Hover Packs to reach objectives from odd angles.
The star of this strategy is the C4 Pack from the Redacted Regiment Warbond. It'll let you destroy objectives without alerting enemies (before you blow things up, anyway), and you can easily use it for AT purposes as well. If you don't have Redacted Regiment, use Thermite Grenades from Democratic Detonation, and if you don't have that, you're going to have a bad time; bring an AT weapon like the Recoilless Rifle or Quasar Cannon so you can destroy objectives.
Didn't You Say These Were Stealth Missions?
Yes, but going purely by stealth isn't always the best course of action. Guerrilla tactics are also very effective if executed properly. If you can take enemies out before they summon reinforcements, you'll be just fine.
Best Armor Passives for Commando Missions in Helldivers 2
|
Passive |
Why is it Good? |
|---|---|
|
Scout |
Detects enemies on your radar by placing map markers. Also makes you harder to detect. |
|
Engineering Kit |
More grenades. |
|
Servo-Assisted |
Lets you throw grenades farther. Good for sticking Thermite at cannons or enemy spawners from a safe, inconspicuous distance. |
|
Reduced Signature |
Make less noise while moving and become harder to detect. |
|
Extra Padding/Med-Kit |
Improves your survivability for moments that don't go according to plan. |
Again, your choice of armor passive here depends on which strategy you want to adopt. If you want to go the guerrilla route, bring Engineering Kit or Servo-Assisted with Thermite Grenades or Dynamite. If you want to go pure stealth, then Reduced Signature and Scout will make your life a lot easier. HD2 armor passives are pretty flexible, so don't be afraid to try out other things that we didn't list here.
Best Weapons for Commando Missions in Helldivers 2
|
Weapon |
Why is it Good |
|---|---|
|
Censer |
Suppressed marksman rifle that can one-tap most infantry units. |
|
Eruptor |
Superb AoE damage for taking out weak enemies and destroying buildings. |
|
Deadeye/Diligence CS |
Great for sniping enemies outside of their detection ranges. |
|
Suppressor/M7S SMG |
Suppressed weapons that are good for taking out weaker targets without alerting others. |
|
Thermite Grenades |
Excellent for both buildings and enemies. |
|
Dynamite |
Great for blowing up buildings, clustered enemies, and even heavy targets like Factory Striders and Hulks. |
|
Ultimatum |
The ultimate panic sidearm for when something big starts attacking you. |
If you truly want to be stealthy, bring any of the suppressed weapons in the game. This will keep base guards from spotting as you're taking them out one by one. You can also kill enemies with non-suppressed guns without being spotted, but you need to be far away from them (roughly 75 meters away or so; the farther, the better).
If you want to go full guerrilla, then any weapon will do. The Eruptor once again stands out as a very strong weapon in Commando Missions, but as long as you can take out enemies before they can call reinforcements, then even the basic Liberator will do.
The only time you truly need to worry about remaining undetected is when you're dealing with patrols. Avoid engaging any of them, as shooting one member will almost always alert the rest, regardless of how sneaky you are.
