Helldivers 2 CEO Shams Jorjani has indicated he'd like to "push difficulty" in the game, although he claims that simply adding "more enemies" isn't the right solution for one massive reason. At this point, there are plenty of skilled Helldivers 2 players out there who are ready for the game's difficulty to go up a notch.
It's rare to see a video game studio communicate with its player base quite like Arrowhead Game Studios. The company's CEO, Shams Jorjani, is frequently in the Helldivers 2 Discord fielding questions from players, and it gives fans an interesting glimpse into what is going on at the studio. It's great for players to know they have a direct line to the development team, as this is useful when it comes to giving constructive feedback (both positive and negative).

Helldivers 2 Wants to Find Ways to Increase the Difficulty
Responding to a player question on Discord, Arrowhead CEO Jorjani claimed the studio is looking to "find other ways to push difficulty" in Helldivers 2, and "more enemies = more difficult." In an ideal world, this would be the perfect solution to increasing the difficulty of Helldivers 2. However, as Jorjani points out, "more enemies = rougher performance." The struggling performance on some players' setups has become a contentious issue for the game of late, which is why adding more enemies isn't been seen as an easy fix on the difficulty side.
Helldivers 2 feels like it's on a constant quest for higher difficulty, especially as more players become comfortable on Super Helldive, the toughest challenge the game has to offer. Jorjani did claim that while "some love d10," "most play at lower difficulty." In the long run, though, it's the hardcore players who enjoy being challenged to the extreme who will keep the game alive, so it makes sense why Arrowhead Game Studios would be looking to cater to this group especially.
One way Helldivers 2 could address difficulty is with new challenging enemies, which were recently revealed to be in development for the game. There's no timescale for when these new enemies will be released, but if Arrowhead Game Studios gets it right, they could be a great way to give players a fresh challenge without having to increase the enemy count or add entirely new difficulty levels into the game.
