Nothing beats the FAF-14 Spear when it comes to anti-tank warfare in Helldivers 2. The portable missile launcher packs enough explosive power to level structures and wipe out heavily armored enemies from hundreds of meters away. You just need to find a good vantage point. The FAF-14 Spear's auto-targeting system will do the rest, locking onto targets before sending a destructive payload with deadly precision.

The FAF-14 Spear has finally been fixed in Helldivers 2. Its targeting system was reworked, and several related bugs were squashed as part of patch 01.000.400.

This might come as a surprise but Helldivers 2 has a dedicated modding community, which has slowly been pumping several high-quality mods.

How to Get the FAF-14 Spear in Helldivers 2

Helldivers 2 - Spear Explosion
The Spear becomes available at level 20 in Helldivers 2.

The FAF-14 Spear Launcher can be unlocked from the Patriotic Administration Center for 9,000 Requisition Slips. It also has a level 20 requirement, which can take new players around a month on average to achieve, depending on their mission difficulty levels and the number of missions completed in Helldivers 2.

The higher the difficulty, the more experience points are gained. Since level 7 (suicide) missions are considered a sweet spot by many players, you will have to complete around 40 suicide missions to reach level 20 for the FAF-14 Spear in Helldivers 2.

Trying to punch stratagem codes while on the run can be frustrating in Helldivers 2. Remember the following button inputs by heart to call down a new FAF-14 Spear much faster: Down, Down, Up, Down, and Down.

How to Use the FAF-14 Spear in Helldivers 2

Helldivers 2 - Spear Lock
The Spear is a fire-and-forget missile launcher in Helldivers 2.

The FAF-14 Spear features a unique firing mechanism among all support weapons in Helldivers 2. It uses an auto-lock-on system that fires self-guided anti-tank missiles for massive explosive damage. Targets that get locked are guaranteed to be obliterated in a single hit. While the literal definition of an easy fire-and-forget playstyle, the weapon warrants a bit of familiarity before you can start picking targets on the other side of the map.

Locking Down Targets

The FAF-14 Spear is the only missile launcher in Helldivers 2 that cannot be fired without a target lock. Unlike the Commando Rocket Launcher, you cannot disable its guidance system to fire unassisted. In addition, the reticle only locks on to fully visible targets. While the locking mechanism can be a bit unpredictable, it will most often fail to lock down targets that are partly hidden behind terrain or other objects. Hence, your best course of action is to get to higher ground to guarantee a target lock with the FAF-14 Spear.

When ready, bring up the reticle by aiming with your mouse's right-click button. Place the reticle on the target and wait for it to turn yellow to green before firing. The target-locking is fully automatic and takes only two seconds unless the line of sight is obstructed or the target is no longer inside the reticle.

The FAF-14 Spear has a targeting range of 300 meters, but you should try to keep targets within medium to long ranges for the highest accuracy. Locking on to targets at close range can be difficult, and since the FAF-14 Spear shoots missiles at an upward angle, you can miss targets that are too close to your launch position.

Furthermore, harsh weather conditions like blizzards can reduce the targeting range, so you might need to change locations to get a lock-on.

Targeting Options

The FAF-14 Spear is one of the few weapons in Helldivers 2 that can be used to destroy structures. It can lock on to Automaton Fabricators and Terminid Bug Holes. It can also lock on to Spore Spewers, Shrieker Nests, and Cannon Turrets.

The Automaton Jammers, however, are the only structures that the FAF-14 Spear cannot lock onto. That being said - if there is a nearby Fabricator, the resulting explosion from its destruction will always destroy the Jammer.

When coming to enemies, the Spear will always prioritize large and armored units. That includes Factory Striders, Hulks, Tanks, Chargers, and Bile Titans. While it can also target Scout Striders, Brood Commanders, Gunships, and Dropships, spending your precious missiles on them would be a waste. Hence, always confirm your targets before firing at will.

Destroying Automaton Fabricators is one of the biggest advantages of using a FAF-14 Spear in Helldivers 2. Unlike Terminid Bug Holes, Fabricators are always located out in the open. You can find a vantage point to destroy multiple outposts across the map and stop them from producing more bots.

Conserving & Restoring Ammo

The FAF-14 Spear comes with a backpack that stores three reserve missiles, giving you a total of four missiles after including the one in the launcher. This is hardly enough for a single mission. Hence, conserve your ammunition by prioritizing only important targets and exploring points of interest to salvage extra ammunition. You gain a missile per ammunition box, two missiles per supply pack, and three missiles if the supply pack-giver has the Superior Packing Methodology ship upgrade in Helldivers 2.
