Since its release in February 2024, Helldivers 2 has seen many changes and improvements. Everything from enemies to weapons has received some form of modification, being made weaker or stronger depending on what Arrowhead Game Studios saw fit to keep gameplay balanced. While huge updates such as the Escalation of Freedom and other major patches have, for better or worse, noticeably changed some of the game's more important aspects, there is one that has the opportunity for more improvement: the terrain. While it isn't lacking in anything in particular, there is one thing about it that could use some additions.
Traveling to different planets and completing missions is the name of the game for Helldivers 2, and doing so involves a lot of exploration across numerous environments. Though the in-game pieces of land serve their roles as battlefields well enough, more can be done with the procedurally generated structures in them. Helldivers 2 has several buildings and shelters to play around with or against, but there are areas in which they could see some improvement. With the right additions, they could have more utility other than being destructible environmental pieces or mission objectives.
Helldivers 2’s Truth Enforcers Warbond Makes a Considerable Step Forward for One Feature
There's a lot to love in Helldivers 2's latest warbond, but amid all the red and black gear is one cosmetic that should only be the first of many.
New Procedurally Generated Buildings Which Can Help Improve Helldivers 2
If there's something that Helldivers 2 should consider updating, it's the randomly placed structures players come across during their expeditions. Arrowhead Game Studios has the opportunity to create new additions that can enhance the gameplay experience, but doing so can be quite a task, especially when considering what to implement that won't heavily affect the combat balance. Although there are many possibilities, there are a few ideas which may seem more plausible than the rest:
- Placing structures that players can enter and fortify themselves in temporarily to escape the line of fire, with the risk of it exploding if it takes too much damage
- Adding a new building that, upon activation by the player, targets and shoots any entity that enters its line of sight, regardless of whoever it may be
- Putting in underground bunkers that players can use to hide in temporarily if not spotted by enemies, with the possibility of being destroyed if attacked
Such additions could become important factors to consider when choosing the missions to play in Helldivers 2, providing more opportunities for different strategies and ways to play. With the right execution, they have the potential to make gameplay more engaging and exciting, improving the overall quality.
How Adding New Structures Invites Other Interesting Possibilities to Helldivers 2
If Arrowhead Game Studios were to add more structures that planets can randomly generate, they could be used by more than just players. The developers can make them so that everyone, including enemies, can strategically use them. This opens up the possibility of interesting environmental interactions, as the development team can think of how the Terminids or Automatons will utilize the structures to engage in battle. It also means a change in the combat dynamic, as the new strategies that both players and enemies can devise around them mean there are more things to consider during missions. Such a development, especially with constant updates, could change people's minds about the best weapons against the Automatons or Terminids, helping ensure they continue to play while giving them more fun experiences.
Helldivers 2 can be considered one of the best co-op games people can play for a long time, but it still needs to find ways to keep people interested. Improving the terrain by giving it more procedurally generated structures is one of the ways that can do that, and Arrowhead Game Studios should consider adding more in future updates.
