Video game adaptations are all the rage right now, and 2025 is starting off with the announcement of quite a few new projects. This includes a major first-party title from Sony and PlayStation Studios, which have announced a Helldivers 2 adaptation.

The original Helldivers game was released in 2015 as a top-down shooter in which players had to fight three enemy factions in chaotic battle scenes. Helldivers 2 was released by Arrowhead Studios last year and quickly became one of the year's top games. The sequel changed the format to become a third-person shooter but kept many of the elements from the original, such as intense action, friendly fire, and enemy factions. Helldivers 2 was a massive success for Sony and Arrowhead, with 12 million copies sold in the game’s first three months of release.

A Helldivers 2 Movie Is Happening

It’s no surprise then that Sony is making Helldivers its next major movie adaptation. During the company’s press conference at CES this week, it was revealed that a Helldivers 2 movie is in development with both Sony and PlayStation Productions on board. “Looking ahead as to what might come next, I'm excited to announce we are working with Sony Pictures on developing a film adaptation of our amazingly popular PlayStation game Helldivers 2,” PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash said (via IGN). No further details about the plot of the film were revealed nor were any key creatives announced.

The story of the game is fairly simple with soldiers known as Helldivers sent into enemy territory to fight for democracy and the liberty of Super Earth. Players are fed story elements via weekly Major Orders, which direct them to places and tasks of interest on the map. The satirical political tone of Helldivers has been compared to that of Starship Troopers and also bears some similarity to Fallout, which is a good indication a Helldivers adaptation could succeed. Given the multiplayer nature of Helldivers 2, it’s likely that the adaptation will need to focus on a set of original characters who are thrown into the chaotic world of the games.

Helldivers Is One of Many Adaptations In the Works At PlayStation Productions

PlayStation Productions has been hard at work in recent years riding the video game adaptation wave. In 2022 it released the Uncharted movie, based on Naughty Dog’s game franchise, with Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg that was met with middling reviews. A year later a Gran Turismo movie starring David Harbour was released under the company banner, which again was met with mixed reactions. On the TV side, the studio has seen much success with HBO’s adaptation of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us, which is set for a second season in 2025. The studio is also developing film and series adaptations of several other PlayStation properties, including Until Dawn, God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, and Twisted Metal Season 2.

Helldivers 2 is available on PS5 and PC.
