Following its Xbox debut, Helldivers 2 has revealed a fresh update on the horizon. Titled "Into the Unjust," this new offering of content brings players deep into Terminid territory, as Helldivers 2 gives a closer look at this alien race's Hive Worlds. Between the game's launch on Xbox, a brand-new Halo-inspired crossover, and now Into the Unjust, Helldivers 2 players have a lot to celebrate, but there are also some major downsides to the update.
The timing of Helldivers 2's newest update is far from ideal. Into the Unjust is scheduled to arrive on September 2, followed by its Dust Devils Premium Warbond on September 4. The promise of this new content being right around the corner is great, but there's a huge juggernaut bound to overshadow the moment: Hollow Knight: Silksong.
Hollow Knight: Silksong comes to both Nintendo Switches, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on September 4. It will also be a day-one Xbox Game Pass release.
Hollow Knight: Silksong Could Throw a Wrench Into Helldivers 2's September Plans
While the arrival of a brand-new Warbond is exciting, it pales in comparison to the arrival of Silksong. The highly-anticipated sequel to 2017's Hollow Knight has been eagerly awaited for years now, and with developer Team Cherry surprise-announcing at Gamescom that the game is only a few weeks away, the hype is now greater than ever. Of course, there are bound to be plenty of hardcore Helldivers 2 fans more excited about the Warbond launch than Silksong, but with the latter also being an Xbox Game Pass launch, the third-person shooter may be at risk of quickly losing some of its fresh Xbox players, at least for a little while.
Silksong's release date has even caused some games to delay their launch. A few of these titles include Baby Steps and Aeterna Lucis.
Helldivers 2 Offering a Double Dose of Warbond Could Backfire
In honor of Helldivers 2 coming to Xbox, the game celebrated with a Halo 3: ODST Warbond upon its launch. This Warbond has barely been available for a day, so the announcement of another Warbond right around the corner is a strange decision on developer Arrowheads Game Studios' part.
On the one hand, this extra Warbond offering is likely being used as a way to retain new players while also catering to Helldivers 2 fans who aren't invested in Halo content. However, this could also give the Xbox crowd the wrong idea about how often to expect Warbonds. The bright side is that Medals can at least have two solid ways to be spent within the next week or two, but that doesn't change the fact that both Warbonds won't have much time to breathe in their own space.
This week has been a big moment for both Xbox and PlayStation. On the same day that Sony-published Helldivers 2 came to Xbox, Gears of War: Reloaded launched for PS5, marking the first time that the flagship Xbox franchise has ever been available on a Sony console.
Helldivers 2 Coming to Xbox is a Game-Changer
This is a huge milestone for the popular third-person shooter. When it launched at the beginning of last year, Helldivers 2 proved to be one of the most surprising games of 2024, and it will be fascinating to see how it fares on Xbox. Helldivers 2's upcoming Into the Unjust update looks like a great way to introduce Xbox fans to its harrowing world, but Silksong could potentially be too much of a distraction.
Of course, only time will tell, but Helldivers 2 could easily see a shake-up in its player count once Silksong arrives. The timing on Helldivers 2's part may not be the greatest, but it's also thrilling to know that the third-person shooter and one of gaming's most-anticipated indie sequels are gearing up to kick off the month of September in a big way.
