In what is sure to be the biggest contribution to progression and customization in quite a while, Helldivers 2 has celebrated the Illuminate’s ensuing onslaught by introducing full-scale weapon customization/personalization. Indeed, nearly all primary weapons in Helldivers 2 now have numbered levels that players increase via gameplay, and at certain levels players unlock customization options for that specific weapon, encouraging players to display mastery of their preferred firearms with attachment modifications and colorway pattern swaps.

Players should not expect all primaries, whether currently in Helldivers 2 or added in the future, to have customizable attachments, as is made evident by the R-2124 Constitution or the FLAM-66 Torcher.

It’ll now be great to see what customization options become available for guns from now on. Plus, while a rigid customization system for Helldivers 2’s secondary weapons may not be feasible given how unique they all are, weapon customization in general could be a positive sign that customization for armor isn’t completely out of the realm of possibility at some point. If so, transmog suddenly has a real possibility of finally seeping its way into Helldivers 2.

Helldivers 2 Update Adds Illuminate Enemies, Weapon Customization

Helldivers 2 announces a new Illuminate attack on Super Earth with fresh enemies, weapon customization, and other highly requested features.

Helldivers 2’s Weapon Customization Breathes New Life into Progression

Anyone who’s stuck with Helldivers 2 a year after its launch and has adored each new Premium Warbond and update will likely be at least marginally familiar with the game’s wide catalog of primary weapons, much less have decided what their preferred firearms are. Every new Warbond bearing a primary weapon bundles with it the opportunity for players to reconsider what their favorites are, and yet a lot of time does go by between Warbonds anyhow.

Thankfully, players are about to get a lot more out of almost every primary weapon they have access to with bountiful customizations, meaning they can try out every firearm and level it up as an additional means of optional progression. Depending on the gun, Helldivers 2’s weapon attachment customization includes any one or more of the following modification categories:

  • Optics
  • Underbarrel
  • Muzzle
  • Magazine

Ironically, the R-2 Amendment earned in Helldivers 2’s Masters of Ceremony Warbond is light on customization options as it only has an Optics category and the same ubiquitous paint job patterns.

Helldivers 2’s Armor Deserves Customization, Too, But Beggars Can’t Be Choosers

Customization on this scale is fairly unprecedented and, while it’s too early to say with any guarantee or even an inkling of it being in the pipeline, it’s thrilling to imagine what Helldivers 2 may consider regarding other customization avenues in-game. Helldivers 2 does not feature transmog because the armor passive a player has is illustrated by the body armor’s appearance. Still, with weapon customization as a neat framework, transmog may not be wholly impractical.

To be fair, attachment customization doesn’t affect how the guns themselves behave aside from incredibly subtle tweaks to stats that aren’t likely to be all that noticeable, allowing such customizations to be rather ornamental. For armor to have transmog capabilities, then, would confirm what Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt has explained, as it would throw players’ assumptions of what their squadmates are wearing into disarray. Of course, not knowing what passives others may have isn’t a make-or-break scenario and never has been in Helldivers 2.

Nonetheless, armor customization itself would be a fun update to have in the future, with players theoretically being able to make quaint, predetermined cosmetic changes and swapping their default colors for generic patterns. Even if weapon or armor transmog never arrives in Helldivers 2, it’ll be no less fun that players’ weapons can be leveled up, customized with various attachments, and splashed with colorway patterns. If nothing else, it’s always great to have another means of progression that players can pour their stagnant, hoarded requisition slips into.
