Arrowhead Game Studios has confirmed that Helldivers 2 will receive a PS5 Pro upgrade. Many Helldivers 2 players weren't very satisfied with its performance and image quality on base PS5 consoles, but the substantially stronger PS5 Pro should provide a decent uplift to the game's visual presentation.
Helldivers 2 launched earlier this year to rave reviews and sky-high player counts, far surpassing expectations for both Arrowhead and Sony. The live-service title peaked at over 450,000 concurrent players on Steam, and as of May 2024, Helldivers 2 has exceeded 12 million copies sold across PS5 and PC. Arrowhead did face some mishaps along the way, such as the infamous PSN login controversy and the negative reactions to Helldivers 2's big Escalation of Freedom update back in August. After a lot of tweaking based on community feedback, though, Helldivers 2 is chugging along quite well.
Now, Helldivers 2 is the latest addition to the expanding list of PS5 Pro enhanced games. Over on the official Helldivers 2 Discord server, Arrowhead community manager Twinbeard revealed that the game will exhibit differences "between the current PS5 and the Pro versions," as reported by VideoGamer. No specific framerate or graphics settings have been detailed so far, and judging by Twinbeard's phrasing, Helldivers 2's PS5 Pro patch may not come out in time for the console's launch on November 7.
PS5 Pro Will Most Likely Alleviate Helldivers 2's Image Quality Woes on Base PS5
Possible delayed launch aside, Helldivers 2 could see significant enhancements on the PS5 Pro. When running on base PS5, Helldivers 2 defaults to 1080p for the 60fps performance mode, and 1728p for the 30fps quality mode. Many PS5 players especially complained about the performance mode's 1080p resolution, citing somewhat hazy image quality when viewed on a 4K TV. The PS5 Pro's beefier GPU and AI-driven PSSR upscaling may help achieve a significantly sharper image output for Helldivers 2, more stable framerates, and if the hardware allows for it, a super smooth 120fps mode as well.
However, there are also optimization concerns surrounding the outdated Bitsquid game engine Arrowhead uses for Helldivers 2. This might be the reason the studio can't disclose details about Helldivers 2's PS5 Pro patch just yet. On the other hand, Arrowhead released the second major Helldivers 2 update for October 2024 last week and concluded its 60-day overhaul plan for the game. Therefore, it's likely the team just needs some breathing room to optimize Helldivers 2 for the PS5 Pro. Hopefully, news surrounding the PS5 Pro upgrade for Helldivers 2 comes sooner rather than later.
