Helldivers 2 creative director Johan Pilestedt has revealed that a significant overhaul of the game's UI system is currently in the works. The Helldivers 2 dev admits that the current system is “very cumbersome to develop,” although that will hopefully change in the future.
For many gamers, Helldivers 2 is a great example of live service done correctly. In many cases, it's a controversial business model, although Helldivers 2 has done a great job of ensuring that players' wants are largely catered to in its regular updates. Arrowhead Game Studio communicates directly with players, too, keeping them in the loop about what it's working on. Given the game's massive success, hopefully this level of support will continue for some time to come.
Helldivers 2’s Incineration Corps Puts the ‘Hell’ in Helldivers
Helldivers 2's Automatons are always fierce threats, but the Incineration Corps sub-faction adds an extra spicy layer with incendiary nightmare fuel.
Helldivers 2 is Revamping Its UI Development System
Creative director Pilestedt was responding to a Reddit comment that claimed hosting in-game votes in-game would “break 50% of the rest of the games functionality.” In response, Pilestedt said, “That's mean... And also sadly true. Our UI system is very cumbersome to develop - but we are working on an improved system that will allow us to build ingame UI faster.” By the sounds of it, making Helldivers 2 updates to the UI is currently a huge challenge, so this should give the developer more freedom in the long run to test changes on a more regular basis, without risking breaking everything.
It has been fascinating to watch various individuals at Arrowhead Game Studios interact with the Helldivers 2 community. Typically, many players pitch questions directly to the developer's CEO, Shams Jorjani, in the game's Discord server. There, Jorjani will often directly answer questions about the future of Helldivers 2, which can lead to some interesting tidbits for fans to get excited about.
Although it may not have the gargantuan player count it had at launch, the Helldivers 2 community is still going very strong as the Galactic War rages on, and players fight to defend managed democracy. As a result, players shouldn't expect to see Helldivers 3 any time soon, with Arrowhead Game Studios currently fully focused on making the current iteration the very best it can be.
