The new primary weapon customization has turned out to be nothing short of a game-changer in Helldivers 2. Not only does this feature allow players to personalize their weapons with a selection of cosmetic patterns and weapon mods, but it also serves as a long-term progression system and an endgame currency sink. Ultimately, this new feature from Helldivers 2’s Galactic Emergency update delivers several highly requested features all in one convenient package, killing multiple birds with one stone.

Given that this feature has turned out to be quite a big improvement for Helldivers 2, this new progression system shouldn’t be exclusive to just primary weapons. Eventually, it would be quite nice to see this same level of customization available for secondary weapons and support weapons in Helldivers 2, giving players countless new opportunities to modify their appearance and fine-tune their weapons’ performance. However, before then, Helldivers 2’s helmet armor should arguably be next in line for a heyday of its own, since this part of a player’s loadout could potentially benefit most from this feature.

Helldivers 2's boosters are in a bit of a rut regarding which are viable and which aren't, and a rework may be in order to rectify that.

Helldivers 2’s Helmets Deserve the Primary Weapon Customization Treatment

While it’s justified that players’ capes in Helldivers 2 provide no unique gameplay advantages aside from their fashion and roleplaying opportunities, it’s arguably a missed opportunity that the different helmets in Helldivers 2 do not affect players’ loadouts. Given that there are stats for each helmet in the game so far, it seemed obvious that Helldivers 2 would eventually experiment with helmets that provided varying stat advantages to players' armor rating, speed, and stamina regen. However, over a year after Helldivers 2 first released, there are still surprisingly no helmets in the game that provide any distinct benefits or varying stats.

Naturally, there’s still hope that future Warbonds for Helldivers 2 could introduce helmets with unique stats and other passive effects. Although if this ever happens, all of the old, existing helmets would also presumably need their own unique stats so as not to fall victim to power creep. Hence, if any part of players' loadouts in Helldivers 2 deserves their own version of the primary weapon customization feature, helmets should be next in line.

Helldivers 2’s Helmets Have a Wealth of Untapped Potential as Buildcrafting Tools

Not only could a customization feature introduce varying stat boosts for players’ helmets, but this could also provide unique new passives, similar to the different body armor perks in Helldivers 2. Unlike body armor, though, this customization feature could allow players to freely pick and choose which perks to utilize for their helmets. For example, helmets in Helldivers 2 could provide perks like:

  • Being able to scan for nearby invisible enemies, like the Stalker and other Gloom Strain Terminids
  • Producing a visual or audible cue to help players locate nearby collectibles or POIs
  • Temporarily highlighting an enemy’s weak point

A Helmet Customization Feature Could Be a Game-Changer for Drip in Helldivers 2

As it currently stands, the only difference between the various helmets in Helldivers 2 is their distinct appearances. So, regardless of introducing new passive stats and perks for each helmet, a helmet customization feature could still double down on what makes each helmet so special in the first place, and give players control over modifying each helmet’s appearance. This kind of customization could be especially useful for fan-made clans and factions to coordinate their uniforms without the need for mods for Helldivers 2. Otherwise, even lone wolf players could take their Helldivers’ drip to the next level with a more personalized style.

Ultimately, Helldivers 2’s helmets have a wealth of untapped potential when it comes to both buildcrafting and fashion/roleplaying opportunities. If any part of the players' loadouts in Helldivers 2 deserves the primary weapon customization treatment next, it should arguably be helmets, though every part of the players’ loadout could potentially benefit from this kind of treatment.
