Summary
- An Xbox port of Helldivers 2 is possible if Sony and Microsoft come to an agreement.
- Helldivers 2 has seen success despite recent controversies.
Despite remaining a Sony exclusive since its release earlier this year, a potential Xbox port of Helldivers 2 is not totally off the table, at least according to one of the game's team members. Arrowhead Game Studio's own community manager recently entertained the idea of an Xbox release for Helldivers 2, sharing that the decision falls much more on Sony and Microsoft than the developers.
Few games have managed to leave a mark quite like Helldivers 2, with the game enjoying an incredibly successful launch back in February 2024. Helldivers 2 was lauded for its core gameplay loop, inspired visuals, and co-op-focused goals. As a result, Helldivers 2 quickly rose to the top of review pages on places like Steam, brandishing the coveted "Overwhelmingly Positive" title for several months. However, Helldivers 2 has stumbled recently, with both Sony and Arrowhead finding themselves in hot water over various decisions within the last few months. With the game's most recent update, Helldivers 2 seems to be back on track, leading many to wonder what may be next.
In response to a question on the game's official Discord, Arrowhead community manager Twinbeard discussed the possibility of an Xbox version of Helldivers 2. VideoGamer.com shared the news, which sparked even more discussion about one of 2024's most-asked questions. "Who says it [Helldivers 2] couldn’t [come to Xbox]?" Said Twinbeard, who went on to explain that the decision falls on the shoulders of Sony and Microsoft's Phil Spencer. "It’s not up to us but to Sony and Phil to duke out, but hypothetically speaking, if both partners think it would benefit them from a financial/brand standpoint, it could. If Sony believes it won’t though, it won’t."
Helldivers 2 Manager Discusses Xbox Port

As time moves on, video game fans have grown to expect most, if not all, multiplayer games to feature crossplay between systems, be it Xbox, PlayStation, or PC. Sony has branched out in recent years, releasing some of its most high-profile exclusives, like God of War and Marvel's Spider-Man, on PC alongside its PlayStation series of consoles. Microsoft, meanwhile, has been releasing titles that were previously exclusive to PC and Xbox users on PlayStation consoles. While this update is certainly more hopeful than some may have thought, gamers should still manage their expectations accordingly and assume they won't be loading up a Helldivers 2 match on their Xbox Series X anytime soon.
Helldivers 2 continues to receive consistent content updates and patches, with the game's central progression Warbond system keeping players coming back for more alien and robot-slaying fun. Over the last year, new missions, planets, and weapons have made their way into Helldivers 2, with some of the largest additions coming in the form of mechs and other new Stratagems. Helldivers 2 recently capped off its 60-day plan to turn things around after enduring some criticism by players, making changes to armor, weapon balancing, and enemies.
