Summary
- Physint is Kojima's upcoming game inspired by fan demand for a Metal Gear-like title.
- Despite Kojima's split from Konami, he continues to show affection for the Metal Gear series.
- Fans are excited about Physint as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear.
Hideo Kojima has shared that his forthcoming game Physint's origin lies in fans wanting him to make "something like Metal Gear." Physint—which will be a PlayStation exclusive—is also an action-espionage title, similar to Metal Gear.
It's been around a decade since Metal Gear creator Kojima's very public breakup with former long-time employer Konami. And, while the former has since launched his own studio and released Death Stranding, the latter has now also shifted its attention back to its major video game brands after Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection and the 2024 hit Silent Hill 2. However, that hasn't stopped Kojima's fans from hoping he would make another Metal Gear entry, even though the IP is owned by Konami. At the same time, the Japanese game auteur has also consistently expressed his fondness for the stealth-action series over the years through several social media posts and, most recently, through an obvious homage to Solid Snake in his forthcoming Death Stranding sequel. As a matter of fact, it has now been revealed that Metal Gear was also directly linked to his decision to pitch Physint.
The Case For Physint to Be More of a Snake Eater Than a Phantom Pain
Hideo Kojima's upcoming espionage game, Physint, should take more inspiration from MGS 3: Snake Eater instead of MGS 5: The Phantom Pain.
In an interview with Edge Magazine (via GamesRadar), Kojima stated that, despite having "lots of new ideas," he chose to go for Physint—another espionage game—because "a lot of people" desired him to develop a Metal Gear-like title again. After personally concluding that "the idea was good," he held talks with Sony, during which they "explored many options," before finally agreeing on the Physint pitch. Talking about the project, which he had previously described as an "interactive game" as well as a "movie," the veteran game director said that such "multiplatform projects" would enable Kojima Productions to "live on, not just through games but in other media too." Further, he touched upon "phase two" for his studio, which admittedly involves "exploring" different entertainment media, saying that his company is "not only a game company."
Kojima Came Up with Physint for Metal Gear Fans
Based on the aforementioned statements, it seems reasonable to say that Kojima's return to the Metal Gear genre, via Physint, is mainly down to the highly popular franchise's enthusiasts. Although not enough information is officially out yet, the Kojima Productions project is still widely seen as the spiritual successor to Metal Gear in the gaming community. Given that 2026, the year that was mentioned by the Death Stranding 2 director during Physint's reveal, is just around the corner, there are chances that more details about the game could surface then.
In the meantime, players who are interested in Kojima's Metal Gear legacy eagerly await the launch of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, scheduled to land on August 28, 2025. The highly anticipated game is a remake of the 2004 original, which is often regarded as one of the best entries in the long-running saga.
