Having already revolutionized game design here on terra firma, developer and gaming auteur Hideo Kojima has seemingly set his sights on the stars, stating that he wants to design a game that can be played in space. The unexpected, but surprisingly not-at-all out of character, remark from the acclaimed creator of the Metal Gear Solid series is sure to get some gamers’ minds racing as they ponder what such a title would even look like.
Originally entering the gaming industry as part of Konami in the late 1980s, Hideo Kojima hoped to use video games as a springboard for launching a career in filmmaking. While these plans ultimately never came to fruition, the impact of Kojima’s career as a designer, writer, and director of video games simply cannot be understated. Known by gamers worldwide for his work on the Metal Gear Solid series, Kojima has developed a reputation for creating innovative titles that challenge traditional expectations about both narrative and gameplay structure. Many fans of the iconic developer were disappointed when it was revealed last month that Kojima isn’t involved with Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, the upcoming remake of his acclaimed game, Metal Gear Solid 3.
At an appearance with The Game Awards founder Geoff Keighley, Hideo Kojima revealed that he would like to travel to space and design a game meant to be played in the zero-g environment. Initially reported by PCGamesN, the remarks came during a Q&A session following the screening of Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds, a new documentary examining the life and work of the legendary creator. Responding to a question about what goals he would still like to accomplish during his life, Kojima received an enthusiastic response from the audience when he answered through a translator that “I want to go to outer space, right.”
Though it can sometimes be difficult to tell when the iconic game developer is joking, Kojima sounded as if he’d seriously considered the idea. Expanding on his answer, Kojima remarked that he wants to “create a game that you could play in space, because right now all games you probably can’t play in outer space” before jokingly pleading with the audience for someone to “please send me up to space.” A game developed in, and for, a zero-g setting wouldn't be entirely surprising coming from a developer known for embracing new technologies. Some gamers have even begun speculating that the gaming auteur may be working on a game for the Vision Pro headset after Kojima appeared at Apple’s WWDC event earlier this month.
Though Hideo Kojima was likely joking when he stated that he’d like to create a game designed to be played in space, nothing can be ruled out when discussing one of gaming’s most creative minds. And given the eccentric designer’s penchant for unusual games and celebrity cameos, maybe Hideo Kojima and Nicholas Cage will have a space-themed game ready to reveal the next time they appear together.
