Launched in fall 2020, the ninth generation of video game consoles, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, has already seen an incredible array of great games across various genres, catering to different player tastes. One of the highlights of this generation has been the notable reduction in single-console exclusives, bringing more flexibility to gaming than ever before and allowing players to enjoy the majority of games on their preferred platform. Almost every year since 2020 has produced true masterpieces — games that have joined the pantheon of the highest-rated video games of all time. Below are some of the best of these titles.
10 Longest Games Of This Generation So Far, Ranked
When looking for a story-driven game to enjoy for weeks, consider these great titles released during the ninth generation of consoles.
This game ranking is based on OpenCritic average scores for games released during this generation, meaning only titles launched after November 2020 for PS5 or Xbox Series are included. For that reason, we won't include any Nintendo Switch games (which bridge the eighth and ninth generations) or PC-only exclusives. Additionally, while highly rated full-fledged remakes are listed, we'll exclude “fresh coat of paint” titles such as remastered games, re-released editions of older games, and expansions that require the base game.
12 God Of War Ragnarök
Average Score: 92
God of War Ragnarok
- Released
- November 9, 2022
- Steam User Score: 87%
- Last-Gen Supported (PS4 only)
Modern God of War's first chapter was an undisputed masterpiece that managed to snag 2018's GOTY award from Red Dead Redemption 2, so expectations were high for God of War Ragnarök. Even if it wasn't possible for the sequel to reach the same earth-shattering level of greatness, essentially delivering more of the same, the follow-up brought a satisfying conclusion to another chapter for Kratos and Atreus.
The scope of the game expanded significantly, with more worlds to explore, characters to meet, and enemies to face. While some tweaks like combat were definite improvements, the more ambitious and broader focus slightly hampered the game's personal side. Additionally, Ragnarök's final act might feel a bit too rushed — a result of the studio's goal to complete the saga in two games rather than stretching the story into a trilogy.
