When Hogwarts Legacy was first announced, no one quite knew what to expect from it. Avalanche Software’s biggest title was Disney Infinity, Harry Potter games had almost always been book adaptations up until then, and the Fantastic Beasts series had left much to be desired. However, upon release, Hogwarts Legacy blew fans away and delivered a thorough simulation of life at the titular school. Now that it has, all eyes are on what the sequel will entail.
With Hogwarts Legacy 2, Avalanche Software has the chance to take the concept to even greater heights. While there are many routes that it could take, one feature that would fit perfectly is the grand return of Bertie Bott's Every Flavored Beans and Chocolate Frog Cards. It may not have been the most advanced feature in the series' history, but its inclusion in the eventual sequel could feel like the perfect nostalgia trip for fans of those classic Harry Potter games.
How Hogwarts Legacy 2 Can Overhaul One of Its Most Prevalent Enemy Types
Hogwarts Legacy has a lot of room for improvement, and that includes the way that it handles some of its more ubiquitous enemies.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 Could Bring Back the Best Collectibles
Bertie Bott's and Chocolate Frog Cards Explained
Many Harry Potter fans will recognize Bertie Bott's and Chocolate Frog cards, as they are an integral part of the Wizarding World's sweets collection. On the very first Hogwarts Express ride that Harry takes, he is introduced to these unique magical treats, so it seemed only natural that they would also play a role in many of the Harry Potter titles. While they were hardly a game-changer, their inclusion as collectibles in past Harry Potter games served as a fun little activity for players to complete.
In many of those earlier Harry Potter games, Bertie Bott's and the Chocolate Frog Cards would be able to be collected throughout the player's journey. They were often littered around the Hogwarts grounds, and if players collected a certain number of them, they could unlock special collectibles or unique rooms for players to access. Additionally, some of the titles featured special bean challenge rooms, which tasked players with collecting a certain amount of beans before time ran out so they could earn a special Chocolate Frog Card. All of this made for a pretty fun challenge, yet the games eventually dropped the concept. Now that Hogwarts Legacy has jumpstarted Harry Potter video games, it's time to bring them back.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 Should Deliver a Modern Version of Those Mechanics
Just like with Quidditch, Hogwarts Legacy does at least have a good canon reason why Bertie Bott's and Chocolate Frogs were nowhere to be found. According to the Wizarding World's lore, Bertie Bott's were not actually invented until the mid-20th century, while Chocolate Frog Cards are believed to have been first introduced sometime in 1926. Hogwarts Legacy was set in the late 1800s, well before the candies' creation. That being said, the same might not be true about Hogwarts Legacy 2.
Since nothing is known about Hogwarts Legacy 2, there is a chance that it could be set later in the Wizarding World timeline. If it is set after the invention of those two magical sweets, then Avalanche really needs to bring them into the fold. Letting players spend their time collecting these beans or cards across a massive open-world, Hogwarts could be a great nostalgic treat. Plus, since games have come a long way since those earlier Harry Potter titles, the studio could put some exciting new spins on the formula, and maybe even make a few new bean challenge rooms in the process.
It remains to be seen just what Hogwarts Legacy 2 will look like. Of course, the studio should spend more time ensuring it is a worthy follow-up to the first before introducing mechanics such as Bertie Bott's or Chocolate Frogs. But, if it does want to add a fun, unique collectible to the mix, then these blasts from the past would be the perfect fit.
