Hogwarts Legacy: Complete Herbology Guide

Starting school at Hogwarts as a fifth year means that Hogwarts Legacy players have a lot to learn if they want to catch up with their classmates. While learning new spells is certainly an important part of this, understanding Herbology and knowing how to utilize it is tremendously helpful as players continue their quest to master Ancient Magic and put down Ranrok's rebellion. Herbology can allow players to grow ingredients to make potions or even turn the tide of a fight with deadly magical plants like Mandrakes, Chinese Chomping Cabbages, or Venomous Tentaculas. Players that really want to lean into Herbology can also improve the effectiveness of their plants by using Talents and Gear Traits.

Herbology refers to the cultivation of magical plants in the world of Hogwarts Legacy. In the game, there are a total of eight different kinds of magical plants for players to grow and use, each of which requires a specific type of seed and planting pot. Read on to learn about all eight magical plants and their uses.

Acquiring Seeds in Hogwarts Legacy

Before players can do anything with Herbology in Hogwarts Legacy, they'll need to purchase seeds to plant. Seeds can be purchased from one of two locations, both of which are in Hogwarts. For magical plants that serve as ingredients such as Dittany Leaves and Shrivelfig Fruit, players will need to head to The Magic Neep. Seeds for other magical plants that can be used in combat instead are purchased from Dogweed and Deathcap.

Unlocking Herbology and Potting Tables in Hogwarts Legacy

After acquiring seeds, players need to unlock their first Potting Table and the ability to acquire more. To do this, Hogwarts students need to attend Herbology class for the first time, as doing so will have Professor Garlick to give the player a Small Pot to grow Dittany Leaves in. Players wanting to obtain more Potting Tables need to continue in the story until they unlock the Room of Requirement. From here, head to Tomes and Scrolls in Hogsmeade and purchase Potting Tables that have more available spaces or larger pots. Prices for these Potting Tables are as follows:

Dittany Leaves are the first magical plant that players will grow in the game , and they are also one of the most useful since they are an ingredient in Wiggenweld Potions, the primary method of healing in Hogwarts Legacy. Dittany Leaves are also the easiest plant to grow.

Dittany Seeds are obtained from The Magic Neep for free on the player's first visit to Hogwarts.
Dittany Seeds can be planted in any size pot.
Dittany Seeds take 10 minutes to grow.
Each harvest yields five Dittany Leaves.
One unit of Dittany Leaves is required to brew a Wiggenweld Potion.

Hogwarts Legacy - Mallowsweet Leaves

Mallowsweet is unique from other magical plants because it is neither a potion ingredient nor a combat plant. Instead, this plant is used to activate Merlin Trials, a key component for players wanting to complete their Field Guide and maximize their gear slots in Hogwarts Legacy.

Mandrakes are the first combat plant that players will likely grow on their own, owing to the fact that they are the cheapest and easiest to grow. Mandrakes have an ear-piercing screen that will stun, disorient, and sometimes outright kill opponents.

Knotgrass Sprigs are the final magical plant material that players can obtain from small pots and are a key ingredient in Invisibility Potions. Though they are just as easy to grow as Dittany Leaves, their seeds are fairly expensive, which could prevent newer players from cultivating this magical plant for a while.

These are combat plants that can do a surprising amount of damage to enemies, making them one of the better options for players wanting a bit of help during tough fights.

Chinese Chomping Cabbage Seeds can be purchased from Dogweed and Deathcap for XXX Galleons.
Chinese Chomping Cabbage Seeds can be planted in Medium or Large Pots.
Chinese Chomping Cabbage Seeds take 12 minutes to grow.
Each harvest yields one Chinese Chomping Cabbage.
Chinese Chomping Cabbages will jump at and attack enemies, dealing heavy damage to unshielded foes.
Players can hold up to 12 Chinese Chomping Cabbages in their Tool Wheel at a time.

Hogwarts Legacy - Shrivelfig Fruits

Shrivelfig Fruits are needed if players want to brew powerful Thunderbrew Potions. It is the only ingredient-yielding magical plant that requires Medium Pots or better. Growing Shrivelfig requires a bit of an investment, as players will need to purchase both the seeds and a Medium Pot spellcraft.

The final type of magical plant ingredient in Hogwarts Legacy is Fluxweed Stems. These are the only ingredient-yielding magical plant to require a Large Pot, and are necessary if players wish to brew the incredibly useful Focus Potion for themselves.

Finally, Venomous Tentaculas are the last type of magical plant that Hogwarts Legacy players can grow. This combat plant can hit enemies from a range and provide additional damage throughout a fight. With the right Hogwarts Legacy talents it can even break shields.

Hogwarts Legacy - Chopping Stations, Composters, and Fertilizer

Another way to obtain magical plant ingredients is with the Chopping Station. These can be conjured into the Room of Requirement and produce one random magical plant ingredient every nine minutes. Composters are also useful for growing magical plants, as they will produce a Fertilizer every three minutes. Applying Fertilizer to a magical plant as it grows will increase its yield by one for the next harvest. This works the same way for ingredient plants as combat plants, meaning Fertilizer is most effective when used on Mandrakes, Chinese Chomping Cabbages, or Venomous Tentacula since it doubles the yield of these plants.
