  • The success of Hogwarts Legacy makes a sequel likely.

New job listings from Avalanche Software seem to indicate that the company is currently gearing up for the development of a new AAA title. With the success of Hogwarts Legacy, it’s not hard to believe that the team could be working on a sequel or perhaps another game in the Harry Potter universe.

Founded back in 1995, Avalanche Software has a long history of games developed before its latest hit. In nearly three decades, the company has made over a dozen games, mostly focusing on adaptations of non-gaming franchises and movie tie-ins. Some of these games include Disney Infinity, Toy Story 3, and Cars 3: Driven to Win, for example. However, none was a bigger hit than the recent Hogwarts Legacy, which was also the largest project ever made by Avalanche.

Now, two job listings were spotted for Avalanche Software online. One of them is for an Associate Software Engineer, and the other is for a Senior Character Technical Artist. Two details make these listings stand out. One of them is that the listings suggest that the new employee won’t be working in the current version of Hogwarts Legacy, as there’s a line mentioning that the person will help to “create what’s next” after their latest blockbuster open world. The other detail is that both job requirements include experience with Unreal Engine 4, the same engine that was used in Hogwarts Legacy. Unreal Engine 5 has been around since 2022, and it would have made sense to switch to that if they were developing a brand-new series that would not reuse anything from their previous title.

Another argument that could be made is that Hogwarts Legacy is simply too successful not to spawn a sequel. Last week, over five months after its launch, Hogwarts Legacy was still up in sales charts, for instance, being the most-sold game in the first half of 2023 in Europe, ahead of other games like Diablo 4 and Tears of the Kingdom.

In any case, it’s still too early to know what Avalanche Games is planning, as it could be developing a Hogwarts Legacy sequel, a spin-off, or maybe a whole new IP entirely. The Harry Potter universe is pretty vast, so there are plenty of ideas for another game, such as exploring more of the world outside Hogwarts or even setting the game around a different time, as this one was set in the 1890s. Gamers will need to wait more before discovering what the future holds.
