Approaching its second anniversary next month, Hogwarts Legacy became the best-selling new video game of 2023 and impressed fans of the Harry Potter franchise with its detailed depiction of Hogwarts and surrounding areas like the village of Hogsmeade and the Forbidden Forest.
While dragons are rarely at the forefront of the Harry Potter franchise, they do exist in 2023's Hogwarts Legacy in a small capacity. One of the many questlines players can partake in is with fellow Hogwarts schoolmate Poppy Sweeting, which involves freeing a dragon from the antagonist Rookwood's poachers. Outside of Poppy's questline, and a brief moment near the end of the game's main quest, dragons are seldom seen in Hogwarts Legacy.
Now That I'm Playing It Again, I Can't Believe Hogwarts Legacy Wasn't Nominated For Any GOTY Awards
Don't get me wrong, I don't think Hogwarts Legacy would've won GOTY, but there is so much to experience in the game that it seems absurd to me that it didn't get a single nomination for any category in the 2023 awards. It was honestly the exact sort of Wizarding World experience many of us had been waiting for, and it had no shortage of Harry Potter-esque experiences we'd all been hoping to try out first-hand. The environments were stunning, I really enjoyed the story, and there were even plenty of accessibility options. Not to mention the music, which was also terrific. I wouldn't say it's a perfect game, but I think they were hard-done by not getting a single nomination in 2023.
It would seem that dragons can make surprise appearances in Hogwarts Legacy, with these experiences being quite rare. On Reddit, Thin-Coyote-551 shared images of a dragon swooping down from the sky and grabbing a Dugbog they were fighting. The user included several screenshots in the post, which showed the gray, purple-eyed dragon flying at ground level and flinging the Dogbog it had picked up into the air. Many people beneath the post commented that they've never randomly come across a dragon while exploring Hogwarts Legacy's open world, even after completing the game and spending countless hours poking around the different hamlets and areas around the castle.
Hogwarts Legacy Player Encounters a Dragon While Exploring
While certainly an epic moment, many fans of the game think it would be even more impressive if players were able to fight these rare dragons in Hogwarts Legacy. The Reddit user mentioned in a reply to a comment that this particular encounter happened around Keenbridge, which is a bit south of the castle in Hogwarts Valley, though these dragons can likely pop up almost anywhere on the map outside the castle, Hogsmeade, or Hogwarts Legacy's Forbidden Forest. Exactly what triggered the dragon to show up is unknown, but some comments on the post jokingly speculate about it having to do with the players' dragon-skin coat.
Warner Bros. Has confirmed that a Hogwarts Legacy sequel is currently being planned and is aiming to be connected in some way to the new Harry Potter TV series that's currently in development. It would be interesting to know whether the follow-up will feature dragons more prominently, potentially letting players battle, or even fly them. However, Hogwarts Legacy's sequel is several years away at least, and no concrete details have been confirmed by Warner Bros. Or developer Avalanche Software so far.
