But since the Harry Potter RPG didn't offer official modding support on day one, its current crop of community-made content mostly consists of texture swaps, performance tweaks, mini-game skips, and other simple modifications made with rudimentary methods like hex editors.
New Avalanche Job Listing All But Confirms Hogwarts Legacy Sequel
If a recently posted job listing is anything to go by, Avalanche Software may have already started working on Hogwarts Legacy 2.
The Hogwarts Legacy modding scene will soon receive a big boost from Avalanche Software, as the developer just announced the game's official Creator Kit. The modding tool will be released on Thursday, January 30. Select mods made with the Creator Kit will be available to download straight from the game's main menu. Avalanche has already teamed up with some content creators on a number of mods demonstrating the capabilities of the upcoming toolkit, all of which will launch alongside the Creator Kit itself.
Some Questions About Hogwarts Legacy's Official Modding Support Still Remain
The Creator Kit was announced with a whimsical trailer featuring several upcoming Hogwarts Legacy mods, including a creature-collection mini-game, a new dungeon, and quirky broom model swaps that let players fly on everything from a phoenix to a dragon. Due to the open-ended nature of community content, it's a given that Avalanche Software will want to vet all user submissions before featuring them in the in-game store. However, the developer has yet to share any details about its mod review process. Approved content will be downloadable with just a few clicks or button presses, making it far more accessible than unofficial Hogwarts Legacy mods.
Hogwarts Legacy's Mod Support Will Be PC-Only, But Maybe Not Forever
Modding support will be added to Hogwarts Legacy free of charge. The Creator Kit itself will be distributed as a separate program, available via Steam and the Epic Games Store. While official mod support will initially be limited to the PC version of the open-world RPG, this may not remain the case indefinitely. Avalanche's trailer announcing the upcoming feature explicitly describes it as "currently" only available on PC, hinting that it could expand to other platforms in the future.
Although console games with mod support are fairly rare, they do exist. Some well-known examples include Bethesda titles like Fallout 4, TES 5: Skyrim, and Starfield. Baldur's Gate 3 also introduced official modding support on consoles back in late 2024. Platform availability aside, the upcoming launch of the Creator Kit is expected to significantly enhance the potential complexity of Hogwarts Legacy mods.
