In the magical halls of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, students learn from a diverse cast of professors, each bringing their unique style and personality to the classroom. Hogwarts Legacy presents faculty members featuring mentors who range from inspiring to downright unbearable. This tier list ranks Hogwarts Legacy's professors based on story significance, personality, teaching effectiveness, and overall impact on the player’s experience.
Future Harry Potter Games May Be Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place
There are likely plenty more Harry Potter games looming on the horizon, but the direction they decide to take may put them in a tough spot.
S-Tier: Magical Mentors Extraordinaire
- Professor Eleazar Fig (Magical Theory)
- Professor Mirabel Garlick (Herbology)
Professor Fig is regarded as one of the most integral characters in Hogwarts Legacy, serving not only as a professor but as the main companion throughout the player's journey. His willingness to treat the protagonist as an equal and his disregard for the rules set by Headmaster Black make him instantly relatable. As the school authority on the subject of Magical Theory, Fig's knowledge of ancient magic directly ties into the main storyline, making him indispensable both narratively and practically.
Professor Garlick earns her status among the elite through sheer charm and educational enthusiasm. Her passion for Herbology shines through every interaction, creating an infectious learning environment. Garlick’s arc -- from overcoming self‐doubt to leading late‐game expeditions in the Forbidden Forest -- reinforces her narrative weight. Her guidance on rare plant hunts and potion ingredients, and her Hufflepuff warmth, underscore her dual role as mentor and adventuring partner, which makes her one of the most beloved professors at Hogwarts.
A-Tier: Exceptional Educators
- Professor Abraham Ronen (Charms)
- Professor Matilda Weasley (Transfiguration)
- Professor Aesop Sharp (Potions)
Before Hogwarts Legacy's launch, learning to cast spells at the iconic school of wizardry stood near the top of checklists to experience. Professor Ronen lived up to the billing, turning the Charms class into an imaginative playground. His inventive lodestone enchantments unlock puzzle shortcuts and hint at magical innovation. Coupled with his characteristically playful teaching style, Ronen's character is grounded in curiosity, making him one of the more memorable teachers in Hogwarts Legacy.
As Transfiguration Professor and Deputy Headmistress, Weasley guides students with authority forged by her past as a Curse-Breaker. Her role in the Room of Requirement quest highlights her as guardian and story driver, elevating her beyond classroom duties. Similarly, Sharp’s Auror background brings a practical edge to Potions class. Though stern, his lessons prepare students for real-world magic. His quest for rare ingredients and revelations of his storied past add depth to brewing, ensuring his class extends beyond mere tutorials.
B-Tier: Competent Professors
- Professor Dinah Hecat (Defense Against the Dark Arts)
- Madam Chiyo Kogawa (Flying Instructor)
- Professor Mudiwa Onai (Divination)
Professor Hecat’s background as a Ministry Unspeakable lends authority to the traditionally cursed DADA position. Though her quest is shorter, the gravity of her teachings resonates during key Dark Arts encounters like Sebastian's spell teachings and eventual casting.
With a past that involved a keen interest in Quidditch, Kogawa shines through the woods of Hogwarts as a flying instructor. The aerial maneuvers and broomstick challenges she assigns are both thrilling and technically demanding, which go a long way to enhancing player immersion. She doesn't appear much on-screen, but her lessons often ring loudly when players are zooming in the sky on their magical brooms.
Professor Onai represents a stark improvement over the Divination teaching in Harry Potter’s era. As a genuine Seer, she introduces rune‐casting puzzles that reward careful observation rather than blind chance. Her calm demeanor and clear explanations elevate Divination from a whimsical side activity to a reliable tool for uncovering hidden secrets across campus. Like Kogawa, she doesn't appear much on-screen, and has few chances to directly impact Hogwarts Legacy's storyline.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 Will Have to Choose Between Two Warring Philosophies
Hogwarts Legacy 2 could one-up its predecessor in many ways, and when it comes to difficulty balance, a tough decision has to be made.
C-Tier: Unremarkable Faculty
- Professor Satyavati Shah (Astronomy)
- Professor Bai Howin (Beasts)
A passionate lover of star pattern formations, Professor Shah's extreme devotion to the path of astronomy is highlighted by her almost accidental hands-on approach to teaching. While undoubtedly knowledgeable, her aloof teaching style manifests in the trial-and-error approach to using Astronomy Tables in Hogwarts Legacy. Her absence from critical quests doesn't do her any favors either, leaving her classes feeling more informative than immersive.
As Beasts Professor, Howin maintains a mysterious presence but rarely engages outside class. Her limited screen time combined with criticism from students like Poppy Sweeting suggests her methods may fall short for some animal enthusiasts. Given the hobby that rearing magical beasts in Hogwarts Legacy grows to be in the mid-to-late-game, it feels like Avalanche Software missed an opportunity to expand on her character and make her more relatable.
D-Tier: Dreadful Instructors
- Professor Cuthbert Binns (History of Magic)
- Professor Phineas Nigellus Black (Headmaster)
While lectures aren't exactly intended as a fun exercise, Professor Binns seems to revel in the monotony through which he delivers his lessons in Hogwarts Legacy. A ghost who still roams the hallways, Binns' dreary demeanor makes him a largely forgettable character in the game, reducing his classes to experiences of going through the motions instead of curiosity and wonder.
Headmaster Black is easily one of the most hated headmasters in Hogwarts history, according to the source material, and this sentiment makes itself visible in Hogwarts Legacy. Quidditch's absence in Hogwarts Legacy was essentially a plot point stemming from Black, and his insufferable air along with this oversight make his character one of the least favorite professors in the game.
