A new report reveals that Hogwarts Legacy greatly surpassed sales expectations at its release. Hogwarts Legacy officially came out in February 2023, although it was only available on PC and current-generation systems.
Hogwarts Legacy was set to launch on PS4 and Xbox One in April, but the previous generation version was delayed to May. Additionally, it’s scheduled to launch for the Nintendo Switch later this year, which will result in Hogwarts Legacy being available on a variety of modern gaming platforms. Despite only releasing on current-gen systems and PC, it looks like Hogwarts Legacy sold way more than expected.
As reported by Insider Gaming, and originally spotted by Twitter user Timur222, Hogwarts Legacy sold 256% more than WB Games’ internal predictions. This information comes from the LinkedIn profile of Warner Bros. Entertainment’s Senior Global Brand Manager, which confirms this number to be from the game’s launch. Hogwarts Legacy sold over 12 million copies within its first two weeks, generating over $850M in this time frame.
Hogwarts Legacy has continued to hold a high position in various sales charts, adding a significant number to this total over the past couple of months. Within a month of its launch, Hogwarts Legacy outsold the lifetime sales of Elden Ring in the UK, with both physical and digital sales considered for both games. Elden Ring was a massive success for FromSoftware and Bandai Namco Entertainment, so it’s highly impressive for Hogwarts Legacy to have outsold its lifetime sales in such a short span of time.
It’ll be interesting to see Hogwarts Legacy’s updated sales whenever WB Games decides to share more information on its market performance. The Hogwarts Legacy team has shared some interesting bits of data on player engagement, confirming that fans have spent 406 million hours playing the game, with an astounding 2.25 billion Dark Wizards defeated in the process. The information was originally revealed on March 10, 2023, so these numbers should have seen a noticeable increase since then.
Hogwarts Legacy will soon launch on more platforms, which will undoubtedly add to its total. However, most cross-generation games appear to be selling way more on PS5 and Xbox Series X as opposed to their last-gen counterparts, so it’ll be interesting to see if the PS4 and Xbox One release of the game makes an impact. The Switch version may also make a huge splash, though fans can already take Hogwarts Legacy on the go with the Steam Deck.
Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, with PS4 and Xbox One versions launching May 5 and a Switch port releasing July 25.
