Summary
- The Hogwarts Legacy sequel may include PvP and PvE elements.
- A new job listing for the sequel explicitly mentions the terms PvP, PvE, matchmaking, and live service.
- While multiplayer may be welcome by some fans of the original title, many Hogwarts Legacy fans hope that the next game will also be a single-player experience.
Multiplayer PvP or PvE elements may be a part of the Hogwarts Legacy sequel, according to a new WB Games job posting. Hogwarts Legacy is just over two years old now, and thanks to it becoming the best-selling game of 2023, even doing the impossible and topping Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, WB Games and developer Avalanche Software have already confirmed a sequel is in the works.
It's safe to say that WB Games hasn't had much luck with live service and multiplayer games in recent years. Its open-world action title, Gotham Knights, failed to make any waves when it was released in 2022, and after a full-blown relaunch, its Smash Bros- like platform brawler, MultiVersus, is shutting down later in May. Perhaps WB Games' biggest recent blunder, aside from closing Monolith Productions and canceling the Wonder Woman game, was Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Rocksteady's ambitious live service experience, which had to shut down not even a full year after its early 2024 launch.
Hogwarts Legacy's Sequel and Nintendo Switch 2 Could Be a Match Made in Heaven
Hogwarts Legacy 2 is years away at this point, but the sequel could be the perfect game to make use of the Switch 2's features.
It doesn't seem like WB Games is giving up on multiplayer and live service just yet, as an Avalanche Software job listing points to the Hogwarts Legacy sequel potentially involving PvP and PvE gameplay. Under a "Story Integration in Multiplayer Systems" bullet point, the listing explicitly mentions the terms PvP, PvE, matchmaking, and live service, and that some parts of the Hogwarts Legacy sequel's narrative will be told through these online elements.
Hogwarts Legacy Sequel Job Listing Mentions Multiplayer, Live Service
At the moment, it's impossible to know whether this means the entire game will be a PvP/PvE live service experience. It's also possible that the game will feature a multiplayer side mode that's detached from the core single-player experience that the Hogwarts Legacy sequel may still offer. After Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, it's shockingly difficult to imagine WB Games still wanting to dip back into the live service well, especially for the sequel to one of the most successful single-player games of the current decade. Nevertheless, with how solid the combat felt in the original game, fans may still be open to a Hogwarts Legacy multiplayer mode of some sort. However, there is undoubtedly a large portion of Hogwarts Legacy fans looking for a single-player sequel.
It'll surely be several more years before Avalanche Software is ready to show anything or spill any concrete details about its Hogwarts Legacy sequel. Since the project seems to still be in early development, these multiplayer live service plans could very well end up changing at some point. It'll be interesting to see how Hogwarts Legacy's sequel pans out if these online multiplayer plans do end up sticking.
