Hogwarts Legacy has been out for some time now, but it is still attracting new players to its sizable magical world. As players embark on this fantastical adventure, they will quickly discover that Hogwarts Legacy's world is chock-full of secrets, so they might benefit from knowing its unwritten rules.
There are plenty of things that Hogwarts Legacy doesn't tell its players outright, but its high accessibility and shallow learning curve don’t require much handholding. That being said, knowing the unwritten rules about Hogwarts Legacy's exploration and combat can give players the upper hand as they journey into Avalanche Software's Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
The Unwritten Rules of Hogwarts Legacy's Exploration
The Key to Unlocking New Spells Is Playing Through Hogwarts Legacy's Story
While it might be tempting for players to do nothing but explore the magical recreation of the Wizarding World in Hogwarts Legacy, prioritizing the main story is the key to unlocking some of the game's best spells. Valuable spells like Revelio and Lumos are unlocked fairly early on in the story, but other important spells like Accio, Disillusionment, Petrificus Totalus, and Alohomora are unlocked much later. As such, mainlining at least the first half of Hogwarts Legacy's story might be the best way to play.
Revelio Is Hogwarts Legacy's Most Valuable Spell
Revelio is such a valuable spell in Hogwarts Legacy that it achieved meme status within just a few days after launch due to players needing to use it so much. As its name suggests, Revelio reveals things in the player's immediate surroundings, including collectibles and important objects. The spell is most useful for collecting Field Guide Pages, which are crucial to progression in Hogwarts Legacy.
Field Guide Pages Can Be Heard as Well as Seen
Field Guide Pages might as well be currency in Hogwarts Legacy, as they are some of the most important items players can acquire in the game. Spotting them can be challenging at times, but they can fortunately also be heard. When casting Revelio, players should listen for the sound of a bell and then move in the direction of the sound. Casting Revelio repeatedly from there will clue the player into whether they have moved closer or further away from the Field Guide Page.
Acquired Gear Scales to the Player's Level
One of the most important things to remember about Hogwarts Legacy's exploration is that acquired gear scales to the player's level. In light of that, and if at all possible, players should wait to open Hogwarts Legacy's Legendary Chests until they need the gear inside. Simply playing through the main story should net players plenty of decent gear, but the gear found in Legendary Chests should be saved until the last minute.
The Unwritten Rules of Hogwarts Legacy's Combat
Hogwarts Legacy's Combat Is Best Played Defensively
Hogwarts Legacy's combat is very simple and arguably far too easy at times, but that doesn't mean there isn't a right way to play. Specifically, Hogwarts Legacy's combat is best played defensively using the Protego spell. If players cast Protego as soon as they would be hit by an enemy's spell, they will deflect that spell back at their attacker for some decent damage.
Ancient Magic Is an Invaluable Combat Skill in Hogwarts Legacy
Something unique about Hogwarts Legacy's magic in comparison to Harry Potter's is Ancient Magic. After playing through a bit of Hogwarts Legacy's main story, players will unlock the ability to use Ancient Magic and receive two bars of an Ancient Magic meter. When a bar is filled by performing combos, players can then perform an Ancient Magic spell. The meter can also be upgraded by finding Ancient Magic hotspots in Hogwarts Legacy's open world.
